When you're all alone
All the children grown
And, like starlings, flown away
It gets lonely early, doesn't it
Lonely early, doesn't it
Every single endless day

When your twilight nears
And one face appears
Turning winter years to May
It gets lonely early, doesn't it
Lonely early, doesn't it
Still the old heart's young enough to say

It was really more than lovely, wasn't it
Truly lovely, wasn't it

Every single lovely day

I had insomnia the other evening so I poured a glass of scotch and put on 'Til The Sun Goes Down' and this song came on and I got really emotional. The way these lyrics roll off his tongue is truly sublime and I think it's my favorite from that (my favorite) disc...
Of course nothing touches Frank's from his immortal album September Of My Years:

What do y'all think of this one??

Sorry, but I find Dylan's singing on this mainly desultory. Frank sings his well. Funny to think that between these two Frank is the 'kid' of 49 here and Dylan is 75 or so. Of course, a half century ago a man on the verge of 50 was perceived as somewhat older than it is today.

It sez the video for the Sinatra is Not Available.

This works : https://youtu.be/hMD2_7zXSRk

This is one that really struck me on Triplicate. It would be a good choice for the live show, along with all the new original material he'll surely be playing soon.

It's impossible to say Dylan's is objectively "better" than Frank's, but as a Dylan fan I identify with him singing it in a way I don't with others. Our man certainly puts it across. It's also impressive how the band plays the same arrangement as a five piece.

"In The Wee Small Hours" + "Only The Lonely" + "September Of My Years" = Frank's "Triplicate".

It's like if Dylan did two more albums in the style of "Blood On The Tracks".

Considering that the Bob trilogy was 5 discs long, I'd throw Where Are You? and No One Cares in there too.

Those two plus Only the Lonely are Sinatra's darkest and the best to get plastered to after a breakup, in my opinion.

Good point. I agree.

In the Wee Small Hours is one of the best records I own. It certainly seems to be the spirit of what Dylan's channeling for much of Shadows in the Night.

This track is my second favorite off the whole album. Right now, favorite is his take of "the best is yet to come". I know will cause controversy, but in my humble (yet correct  ) opinion he sings it better than Bennett and Buble or whatever his name is .
Funny, before Shadows came out, I never even liked most of the songs , even Autumn leaves- which I"ve sung for years , didn't appeal to me. Now I love it :)Something about bobby d and his sweet voice is all I can say...
