Compilation albums drive me up a wall.

It’s always the same songs, the hits, that are bundled together every few years. I understand the reason for this, of course, but there’s a wealth of material that routinely gets overlooked. I think at this point, a compilation consisting of deeper cuts or rare gems could be issued, which got me thinking of what could be on it. Here’s what I came up with, it’s not without Dylan’s popular songs (and it even has some covers) but I think it’s more varied and interesting.

1. Moonshiner/ Corrina Corrina
2. Girl From the North Country
3. Percy’s Song
4. Restless Farewell
5. Spanish Harlem Incident
6. She Belongs to Me
7. Desolation Row/From a Buick 6
8. Visions of Johanna (might as well, right?)/ I’ll Keep it With Mine
9. As I Went Out One Morning/ Dear Landlord
10. Tears of Rage
11. Dirge/Hazel
12. Idiot Wind/ Up to Me
13. Isis (live or studio)/Black Diamond Bay
14. Where Are You Tonight?(Journey Through Dark Heat)
15. Every Grain of Sand (outtake)
16. I and I/ BWM
17. Ring Them Bells/ Most of the Time/ Man in the Long Black Coat
18. Lone Pilgrim
19. Standing in the Doorway/ Trying to Get to Heaven
20. Really anything post TOOM that hasn’t been used yet
21. Stay With Me?

What would you put on a compilation album?

I can see what you mean, and from a fan's point of view, you are absolutely right. But seen from the record companies side: why should such a compilation as the one you suggest be released? These compilations are made for the casual listeners, who maybe want to get a first impression on Dylan. But for that you need the "hits".

As far as your list is concerned, there are a lot of songs I would include on my compilation, too. Maybe a little less stuff from the 60ies and more from the 80ies.

Good point. Compilations are for the great unwashed, the rest of us want complete sessions or at least pure rarities. Or at the very least rarities and outtakes from spesific times (Tell Tale Signs).

Then again, why bring official releases into it? Thousandhighways has you covered for fan-oriented compilations!

The OP's list is very good indeed, I'd play it.

I'm planning to make a multi-CD Dylan compilation for myself, along these lines. As to 'what is the point?', well, there are some tracks on the albums that I simply don't much like, and many that I like, but am sick to death of. Plus there are the great non-album tracks that I'd like to hear in an album contest.
