I am listening to Christmas In the Heart right now and I am completely memorized like usual when I listen to this masterpiece. But in this play through, the backing vocals are really sticking out because of just how good they are. That got me thinking of the other set of albums with strong backing vocals- Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot of Love. Which group of backing singers do you like better?

The styles are too different to compare them, IMO.

I agree with this in part. When I am listening to the gospel era albums and shows, they seem to be dead on... cannot imagine them being any better.

While listening to Christmas In the Heart the songs are glorious and divine, the backing vocals like angels from heaven and I think, nothing could possibly be better than this.

I don't know that they can really be compared but one thing is for certain. The backing vocals of these two releases (eras) are better than the backing vocals on anything prior to the gospel era.

Gospel backers are amazing, especially from '78-'81.
I appreciate the idea of the rough-smooth contrast on CITH, but to me, the idea
works better on paper than in reality.

That would be my answer, too.
But with all the differences, there is one thing that both groups of backing singers have in common: they work perfectly on the job they are supposed to do.
The 79-81 singers support the passion and the conviction that Bob felt for his new material then.
And the CITH singers bring across the feeling of nostalgia, of childhood memories, "the good old days", that I guess Bob wanted to create with this album.
