Listening to the version from 12/3/80:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/cg5acb2rl ... 282%29.mp3

Anybody wanna try to decipher the lyrics?
Are there other versions from this tour where it's easier to hear the lyrics?

Here’s what I hear:

Was then on a cloudy road when the leaves are dying
??? the meadow, ??? house in ghetto?
Even on the rooftops see two lovers fighting
?? make up, ?? begin to break up

Keep on traveling and you can’t get caught
Keep on rollin whether you might give it a shot

Ain’t gonna go to hell for anybody

On your poor man table you leavin there some money
Holdin your baby, drive em crazy
??? you’re a dancer honey
What about you tell me, ???

??? living in your paradise
Can’t get bitten by that same snake twice

Ain’t gonna go to hell for anybody

(Same bridge as earlier version)

Next verse???????? Can’t hear one word...

Final verse is a repeat of the first verse with minor changes

Keep on rolling whether you're dragged, beaten or shot

Here's my take.

We'll step into a crowded room (?) and the leaves are dying,
All above the ghetto, far outside the middle
I can feel it in the rooftops, I see two lovers sighing
Lord they'll make up, down by their break up (?)
Oh my baby, you can't get caught,
gotta keep on rollin' whether you're drugged, beaten or shot.

Well, I ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Not tonight, not tomorrow, no-o

In their darkest room of your mind you're leaving me some money,
Hold me baby, you're driving me crazy,
Fall in love (Follow lovers?) down to El Peso from Odessa, honey
-------- ?
-------- ?
Keep on rolling down to paradise, you can't get bit by the same snake twice

Well, I ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody, (well no)
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Not tonight, not tomorrow, no-o

Smoke it rises forever, on a one-way ticket to burn,
A place reserved for the devil, and for all of those that love evil
A place of darkness and chains, you'll never return

A .. down and you can you hear it, baby
......... Together
....... Disabled
Way down ... Can't you see it, baby?
I can't believe it, how you recieve/decieve it
On your way..
Walking away with your legs spread apart

Well, I ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody, (well no)
Ain't gonna go to hell for anybody,
Not tonight, not tomorrow, a-ah

Moving down on your scene and there's snowflakes falling
All by your ..
..
Black/Rat race..
.. Purpose.
... Earth is?

People look you're paradise, you can't get bit by that same snake twice.

You never know. Bob might just also mumble some verses, which makes it impossible to even know what he wanted to sing.

This version has been around a while. I see it as the first example of Bob's religious fervor cracking. Compare these lyrics to the ones from months earlier and the difference is striking. Here we have a song drastically rewritten to be more secular in the vein of Caribbean Wind.

It's amazing that this particular recording is the most clear, articulated version I've heard of the second Ain't Gonna Go To Hell for Anynody arrangement, and I've heard all the circulating ones! If he ever managed to finish writing it, he certainly didn't ever perform a fully intelligible one on stage. I still adore it, of course.
