To me these songs are remarkably similar, not only because they describe an apocalyptic tragedy about the world sinking but also because both songs are about perspective/ narrator's point of view.

So in both songs we are given small stories of love and death in an apocalyptic setting from a seemingly omniscient point of view until we reach a point where a watchman appears and it becomes clear that it's all about him and the things that he imagines.

I had the songs pit fight in my head to reach the conclusion that to me Tempest is actually a better song. The events we are given sometimes feel somewhat silly, as in black diamond bay, but i like the fact that they seem to be almost non-linear. So if you take tempest as a story without taking the context of the titanic into account, you can't tell the order of the events described in regards to the ship sinking. In fact, the whole song can feel almost incoherent without the watchman verses. And when they arrive, even though he's just another character, it reallly ties together because although it's free-form it's the watchman's dream. This is somewhat the case in BDB ( the narrator who watches TV couldn't possibly know all the details ) but because everything in the story is a little more specific and has a main character, for me it feels a bit more limited. Tempest is more open and more dreamy.
Tempest is also more openly religious, which usually works well in Bob's songs.

I also love how in Tempest, the narrator at one point even tries to intervene by telling someone in his dream, so it's a total mindfuck :)
In the end, i think tempest as a song is more conscious about its theme being death and the feeling of abandonment and vanity that in creates to us ( ie "they waited at the landing and they tried to understand but there is no understanding for the judgment of god's hand" )

So what do you think? Which is your favourite song of the two and why?

Never would have guessed somebody would ever come up with this, but I do love me a "Vs" poll, so I voted, for Black diamond bay.

There aren´t many Dylan songs that bore me more than Tempest, so this was a no brainer.

Black Diamond Bay of course. Hell of a song. Tempest is a bore musically that never seems to end.

Is the next poll going to be Visions of Johanna vs If You Ever Go to Houston?

BDB vs Tweeter and Monkey Man (vs TV Talkin') would be more aligned, perhaps.

no, but then again i must admit i never did love black diamond bay as much as visions or even similar songs from that period like lily rosemary. Even so, i was surprised to admit that i enjoy tempest more. Maybe it's because i haven't heard it as many times as BDB, but it honestly seems more interesting to me.

The results are 24-8 as i type this, so apparently one third agrees.

The vocal performance on Black Diamond Bay is so far superior to the one on Tempest that to my ears it's almost a non-starter in terms of comparison. Also, the Desire sound touches a sublimity that the sound of Tempest doesn't come near to approaching. And just as songs, Black Diamond Bay is far more interesting musically than the endless story wheel of Tempest.

I hear you. I can find charm in his old man's voice. But that Desire voice is the best Dylan would ever sound in terms of combining tone and phrasing.

I voted for Tempest, because it is a better lyric with more depth. BDB is a better performance, both musically and in terms of a stronger, younger and more flexible voice. I usually give the benefit of the doubt to the lyrics.

The weird thing about Black Diamond Bay is that it's a song that feels almost too musically complex (by Dylan standards) for the lyrics to come across properly. He has to fit to squarely into the rhythm and melody for the lyrics to ever grab me while listening even though I can acknowledge there very clever when I read them. Compare Isis, Hurricane or Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, which really suck you into their strange narrative because of their musical simplicity.

I voted for Tempest just because it's one of my favorite old man Dylan vocals and the sheer gravitas he brings to the event really moves me. I know it's hated by a great deal but its actually one of my all time favorites.

I never liked Tempest, so the decision was easy for me. The song just keeps going on forever and musically, it's just boring.
I have always been fascinated how the story unfolds on BDB, all the little details and even all the things that are not told. And how in the end it all fits together. A great song.

Are you accusing us Tempest-preferers of being one too many tragos and a thousand miles behind?

Tempest is a spectacularly bad song. Only a genius could write a song this truly astoundingly awful. The lyrics are trite and the tune is pathetic.

My children realised how bad this song is. They thought it resembled a song from Spongebob Squarepants, and once sang "meow meow" for all 411 minutes that Tempest lasts.

Here's the Spongebob moment:

The resemblance is stunning. Perhaps I'm being unkind on Spongebob.

I never payed much attention to either. But, giving them another listen neither is bad. For another artist, either could be a strong song.

BDB pulls you into the story better though IMO.
