Someone posted the following but I can't locate it in the forum. I'd like to continue the discussion that included a question asking if Bob was familiar with the Talmud. I am sure he is. I like to see if others have found other examples in his work or works written about him that would broaden the discussion.

From the Annotated Dylan:

Not Dark Yet

I was born here and I'll die here against my will.

This is paraphrased from the collection of ancient law known as the Talmud. It is from the section written in Hebrew known as the Mishna, the tractate known as Pirkei Avot (chapters, or ethics, of the fathers), 4:29. "And let not your evil inclination promise you that the grave will be an escape for you, for against your will you were created; against your will you were born; against your will you live; against your will you die, and against your will you are destined to give an account before the King." The Talmud was compiled around 100-200 AD.

Shalom,

well, what does it mean: "familiar with the Talmud" ?

Guess you know how much it is?

Anyway, Bob mentioned (I think in Chronicles) that a Rabbi appeared at the right time to learn the stuff for his Bar Mizwa at his hometown. That means also some lectures from the Talmud.

Isn't the Talmud more a comment/ interpretation of the Torah rather than "a law"?

As well as "Torah" does not mean Law but Lecture, Knowledge (like Logos).

Since the "The end of time has just begun" great issue to feed the mind.

Love, Wisdom, Mercy

Careful. Like Beetlejuice, if you say his name two more times, he'll be allowed to pop back into this dimension.

Cool find! I'd never heard that connection from 'Not Dark Yet,' but it's a wonderful discovery. I'm most familiar with Dylan's Bible-oriented lyrical appropriation, but am always excited to find other sources. This guy's really one of our culture's best postmodern artists.
