I believe, many youngsters who hear this line from "Under Your Spell" (1986) don't know what he is talking about.

Are there other lines/phrases one who only knows the modern times [sic!] cannot understand easily?

Not a problem, as no young person is ever going to listen to that song voluntarily.

I was feelin’ kinda lonesome and blue
I needed somebody to talk to
So I called up the operator of time
Just to hear a voice of some kind
“When you hear the beep it will be three o’clock”
She said that for over an hour
And I hung up

From Talkin’ World War III Blues; who would phone the speaking clock today? Though some of the other stuff in the song seems more relevant now than for some time given the way things are going...

Funnily enough, I did, just yesterday. Mainly out of curiosity, to see if it still exists. It does (in the UK, at any rate).

Anything from the mid 60s. Impossible to understand today. Impossible to understand back then either!

Yeah, sometimes I get the idea that Bob is really old.

"All across the telegraph his name it did resound."
Who sends telegrams anymore!

"Automobile comin' into style."
It's been in style for a while now, Bob!

"I need a steam shovel, mama, to keep away the dead."
Good luck finding one!

"Wish I hadn't sold my old Victrola."
Now what are you going to play your Gene Austin records on!

"There are thousands in the phone booth"

Image
(I made this pic just a few weeks ago, just because I have not seen one for a long time! It was spoiled, there was no phone inside, just stripped wires. There were no thousands at the gate.)

When performing "Ballad of a Thin Man" in the sixties, sometimes Dylan would sing:

“You should be made to be wearing at all times a telephone."

With advances in technology, some of his most surreal lines will become literal.

But I think younger fans will be puzzled by lines like:

"We live in a political world / Where peace is not welcome at all."

Younger people are conditioned to create and feed off competition, conflict and drama so much, they can't fathom that peace has any value.

Ha, you're right, I'm always preaching stress vs un-stress.

Only, they'll need peace too, eventually.

If there was a quatrain by nostadamus about that telephone wearing at all times. It would be all the rage. Bob dylan is a genius. Either that or hes seen the clip from the 20s of an old woman talking on a what looks like a mobile phone outside a charlie chaplin premier :) Its a fascinating clip is anyone hasnt seen it yet.

"I'll call you tomorrow if there's phones where I am" could easily be said this week
between the Caribbean and Florida.

Will anyone know who peter cronkite, lenny bruce, rubin carter, john crow, alicia keys lol, in years to come without google?

Driving buicks and catching freight trains and buying caddillacs after THE war might seems stange. His small uses of the words negro, nigger and other now derogitary terms ( i dont mean any hurt in using these words sorry) have stood the test of time for such a "commercail" artist. I hope its because it was always the truth and dosent try to delute the reality of what these races had to put up with and live in fear. We should never forget these times and to me bobs a good keeper of auld saying and brutally true storys long forgotton or diluted gradually tmake us all feel better.

Phew shouldnt have taken those sleepin pills with a joint :P
