Can you name any songs not given new arrangements live,
by this i mean songs that when played, are as close to the
original recordings as its possible to get with Dylan;
my two are;

Senor
Rainy Day Woman

That's a good one, even the 1978 version was close to the original
(i know technically it was originally acoustic but his renditions have
remained faithful in band form)

Ballad of a Thin Man hasn't ever changed much.

Obviously Blowing in not the best example.

I'll go with Ballad of a thin man too, chorus, no chorus, but always the same feeling.

Anything off Modern Times aside from Beyond the Horizon, which got a different arrangement for a few shows in '08, as far as I know...

I don't know -- last time I saw "Spirit on the Water" it was pretty unrecognizable from the album version. Not sure if that would count as a new arrangement per se, but it was pretty drastically different.

Rainy Day Women was rearranged in 2010 and the lyrics were sung over Link Wray's Rumble which was super cool.

A related question: are there any drastic rewrites or rearrangements of songs from the Jack Frost era that I need to hear? I've heard a live Pay in Blood that was quite different from record, and Long and Wasted Years too. The rest of the Jackfrost era material that I have heard from live shows seems just like bluesier versions of the original, not really a rearrangement. Can anyone guide me to some other examples of late-era rearrangements?

Hard Rain version? Though, dunno, maybe that's not technically a rearrangement, but just that it's terrible.

:shock: really? -- Hasn't BITW renewed itself through so many (skillful) incarnations that it's a completely different song now-save for words and reverie? have you heard it lately? My friends, are you joking? :lol:

Like a rolling stone has always had the same basic arrangement. I haven't heard all of them, but one that deviates from the norm is the 1978 version (Budokan). In that version, the ascending chords in the verse are substituted with sus chords. Not as gratifying, but it kinda works. It was in the bass players hands. If he had gone up from C in the last verse he would have scored a home run.

My thoughts too. This latest version is unrecognizable from its studio album incarnation, and different from even the boring, standard ones of the 2000's.

I need to revisit some of the newer renditions of 'Blowin In The Wind', the last year
i paid it any serious listening attention was the 2002/3 shows.
Since then i've tended to select the newer songs to focus on, and playing full
concerts more in the background, but i'd always thought that aside from the
obvious additional instrumentation, the structure and chords had ran pretty
much the same as it had always been. See, my fault, i should be paying
attention!!
