Hi all,

While I've listened to the albums, though not regularly, I've always kind of overlooked Bob's gospel period, but now with the new bootleg series fast approaching I'd like to try and digest some shows.

I've never been hugely enamoured with the subject matter but I know some of our man's performances around this time were pretty incredible so I'd be grateful for any recommendations you lovely people may have.

Thanks!

Hibbs

I'd say check out Santa Monica 1979-18-11 .. and my personal favourite Avignon France 25-07-81,
the latter has phenomenal vocals by Bob.
Being from the UK we write the date then year just to clear up any confusion on the dates.

Why not wait until the BS release? Rumor says there will be live stuff, and you will get to listen to it/watch in top quality. After that you can look for more. That's what the worm is doing.
Anyway, if you really cannot wait, Toronto 20th april 1980 is quite spectacular

I'd say particularly Slow Train, Saved (one of my favourite Dylan live performances) and Pressing On from this show; but it's all good. And available to watch, in hugely improved quality:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0J3Y5s_kfo&t=5958s (jump straight to 1.34 for Saved, and turn it up)

For me the run from last Warfield (11-16-79) through Santa Monica (11-18 through 11-21 or so) was the peak. There's some pretty good January 1980 stuff, including the one weird Colorado show with final performances of some songs. That was a funky soundboard if I recall. By the time of the studio recording and Toronto the performances were getting a bit stale.

The only 1981 live recording I liked was Houston.

i like all the shows from 1980 and 1981. He never sang so strongly and convicing. He could bring you to tears.
i would like a DVD from Warfield 16 november 1980 & Boston 21 october 1981.
But more shows are welcome (he filmed almost evry show, so why not releaese it in our life time?).

Thanks for the recommendations all, I shall do some digging around in the Rare Recordings section this evening - and I'm a UK-er too, Libes, so I'm good with these dates

Not an unreasonable question, wormy, but I'm flying out to the States on Saturday and so it'd be nice to have something new to listen to and these shows will make a nice dent in those 9 hours of flight!

we have had this thread before...so I will just suggest that while I think 11/16/79 is one of Dylan's best concerts ever/my favorite at least.....one should listen to earlier shows in that residency...specifically shows 1,then 4 and then show 6 before listening to the 16th.....the evolution of the songs and Dylan's confidence in singing them is there for all to hear.......especially on Convenant Woman.......

by the time 1980 hit....the songs were just know longer new to him....a lot of the spontaneity gone and energy feels forced

Earls Court '81 ( Birdsnest in your hair ) is phenomenal and one of my favourites
