Bob's teeth from around 88 to 92/3 - at least to me - look very different. Also that period marks a certain sound/tone/timbre in his voice which was soon to disappear really starting around 1994.

Anyone out there know anything about how new teeth or dental implants can change the sound/phrasing in someones voice.

I think of Van Morrison, there was a period in his career around the same time as Bob when he got new teeth and his voice sounded so thin and weird.

In my understanding, the phenomenon has to do with the circulation of breath. Back in the days before Bob used to visit a dentist, his notoriously acrid breath circulated up through the nasal passages, having a caustic effect, literally burning everything its path, and keeping the nasal passages free and open. Once Bob finally had his mouth cleaned in the mid-1980's though, his breath lost its fetid quality and instead, was now circulating a more piney bouquet. The nasal passages, free from the samsara of being burnt open from each new acidic breath, collapsed and constricted, causing the pinched vocals that would come to define his voice in the 1980's. In the early 1990's however, Bob slipped back into his old ways, stopped brushing his teeth, tossed the floss, and again forwent dentist visits. By this time though, he could no longer breathe through his nose. He had become a mouth breather. His nasal passages forever blocked, Bob's mephitic breath now went to work on his larynx, every inhale scalding his vocal folds. The damage to his voicebox quickly piled up, and alas, the breath-induced descent into the barking wolfman we would come to know and love.

If Bob's improved dental hygiene is directly related to the degradation of his voice, then imagine how gross his mouth must have been during the Nashville Skyline sessions.

If anybody is so interested in this teeth topic, maybe You should study Shane McGowan from debute til now. He has got more teeth in his mouth.
I have lost some, maybe thats why I´m so tempted to sing out now, the breath gets less resistance? 8)

What about his hair plugs? He's had a lot of work done to cover up his balding areas.

Bob had hair plugs installed in the late 80s.

Late 90s and early 2000s showed some pretty massive frontal balding. Now he's covered it up or had it repaired.

I'm quite serious about the hair plugs. There was a confirmed source as proof and it hit the media outlets, then Bob's people probably silenced them or paid them off to have the articles removed. Plus that 60 minutes interview, Bob's frontal hair looked quite fake. Anyway, I'm guessing he had the plugs done in 87 or 88.

Google has snippets here and there, such as this:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21039&view=print

I've seen some other ER users mention this through the years but I didn't search the site to find it.

I've also heard wigs suggested from time to time...

Dental work can change a singer's vocal timbre, but so can cocaine, bourbon, cigarettes and gargling of barbed wire, along with the natural aging process. The result being that its hard to say for sure what impact dental implants had.

Hair plugs? His hair looks like an old brillo pad. If Bob was going bald and had a problem with it, I think he'd just wear a hat all the time.

He's pretty bald in the front. Seen it many times. There's a lot of unusual discoloration that fails to dye, so I'm guessing plugs.

Two things: Balding is not the only effect age has on hair. Hair thinning is also a thing. Looks like his hair is much thinner and more thinning than balding.

Also, there is an effect I call the "statin island" where hair thins, particularly around the crown, due to the use of state drugs.

Anyone had a look in his medicine chest?

I think Joni Mitchell made some comments about how they sang into the same microphone and he was stinking her out.

Look up the video of Never Let me go, a duet with Joan Baez. It looks like there's food caught between his teeth. And of course there's that dead tooth on the bottom. If nothing else stunk, that thing surely did. There must have been a big improvement when it came out. The dentist still has it in a little vial, once in a while he pops the lid and sniffs it. Wouldn't you? Of course you would.

I love how this thread is totally inane, and I started it with total insanity.

And the balding in the front

He's always had a receding hairline. Even in 1966.
