At my most optimistic, I have the feeling that Bob already has a new studio album in the can (produced by Daniel Lanois), for release this fall, and that they were recording a video to release with its promotion.

Actually maybe not; I've just read on Amazon that Clinton Heylin's forthcoming book Trouble In Mind is being released to coincide with the arrival of a gospel bootleg series in November, so I'd be surprised if they put out a new studio album this fall.

But maybe he still did record with Lanois and they are holding out for a winter/spring 2018 release!!

The M&A stuff is ok, nothing more. 'I'll Remember You' has plenty of pathos, but 'Cold Irons' and 'Levee,' while good showcases for the band, have iffy vocals. As for these sessions in Ireland - perhaps it was just a case of getting Bob and the current band on tape, for posterity's sake/unspecified future use. If there's a new album, I'd be surprised if they shot a live performance of the songs. That's not the way Bob usually works - it takes a good while for him to introduce new material into the live set, and then a further good while for live arrangements to coalesce into some kind of shape.

Could be a part of a major showcase of live performances down the years, something that would appeal to many. The early days, Newport, Albert Hall '65 & '66, IOW. The Band in '74, Rolling Thunder '76, world tour in '78. The religous shows, Europe '84, followed by the NET.

Then again he might be calling it quits, but I doubt that.

My completely uninformed guess -- Bootleg Series (whatever that may be) to be released in November-ish, with a new Dylan album next spring.

They brought the film crew to make a short vignette of Dylan and band recording, to be included in the Deluxe version of the new album.

Or, I dunno, maybe he's going to be in a commercial. Who knows with this crazy cat.

Here's some exhibit A wishful thinking: the material would be well known to them from having played the various tracks live down the years so a 3 day turnaround is achievable for a 20th anniversary re-recording of TOOM Jack Frost style to put out as part of special release to mark the occasion later this year.

I think you're mistaken, I remember it quite clearly and TOOM was only five or six years ago. Ten tops.

I'm hoping he had Mavis join him. Their duet on Gonna Change My Way of Thinkin' was outstanding and the world is begging for more.

I'll second that. It's the most religious album he's ever made, including the Gospel trilogy.

I think he recorded a bunch of songs for David Lynch to choose from to insert into his Twin Peaks show.

Is there one song on Tempest without a theological theme? Even the Lennon song operates more deeply as a commentary on Saint John. Of course, Dylan's religious views are more nuanced and subtle now than in 1980. Nevertheless, there are clear references throughout to 'the Mother of Our Lord', Grace, Resurrection, Judgement, Sin and so on.

I'd say it represents a maturing of Dylan's religious stance, one that has progressed since his days as a novice, albeit controversial, Christian in '79-'81.

While I'm at it, I'll make another bold claim! I'd venture that Dylan's beliefs are quite close to Eastern Orthodox nowadays, not implying that he has any formal membership (not his style, but recall that his family's roots are in Russia, which may or may not have something to do with it).

John Hillcoat is, I believe, currently working on the third season of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, so there may be an outside chance that this is somehow involved in that, but it seems unlikely (although it would be awesome).
