Dylan's a proud songwriter and thrilled when he's covered. He also enjoys drawing attention to other songwriters. Happily he's nowhere near as narrow as some of his listeners. I believe he has a unique sense of time and that plenty of covers fail. But the notion that nobody else can put a compelling interpretation on his songs is absurd.

It is so, but it happens remarkably rarely that an interpretative reading touches me more than the original.

Used to feel the same way, then I opened my ears. Listening to more artists helped.

That's part of it too for me.

But there are limits
Not accepting that any other vocal version of LARS will do is more than just an indicator of how much I like the original, it's more that a small chunk of my identity that I've invested in listening to music would be invalidated otherwise[DISAPPOINTED FACE]
On the other side how much of the original excitement should even be left after so long?
As well as rationalising no-one sings Dylan like Dylan, I'm trying to be honest with myself, knowing that clinging onto a strong positive emotion that I no longer experience is futile and thereby listen with pleasure to the sounds of LARS that still interest me: Bloomfield and Griffin's parts.

Ani DeFranco does an intriguing cover of "Hurricane" that I find hard not to like.

Wow, this is great!

Her Most Of The Time is nice, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7cye0qwLIo
DiFranco is an artist whose name I've heard a lot, but never really got around to listening to. I guess I'll change that.

Bad example, ha ha. LARS is one a couple dozen entirely perfect recordings I can think of. Nevertheless Hendrix sang fine live versions of the tune, fresh from going hungry and being thoroughly misunderstood.

I didn't compare the perfection of Dylan's LARS unfavourably with anyone else's. I just wanted to point out that for this long term fan, there is very little overlap left when I compare my feelings now when I hear it to back in the late 70s.
Hendrix version at Monterey is flashy, but there isn't a lot of the song where I feel he actually gets over what the song might mean to him in that moment. Just my opinion. I reserve the right to watch it again and recant

If the songs can't be covered and sound good, they can't be good songs.
