This makes sense. The Dignity from the Red Box is the one from Touched By an Angel and not Greatest HIts Vol. III. Isis and Heart of Mine were both on Biograph probably after appearing on those singles.

This will be the case, but it's only that it goes : first released on Biograph, Isis and Heart and I believe that it's not fully correct, that's all.

Oh if it says first released than that is very wrong.

I can't see if this has been answered already, but are the Side Tracks remastered or louder or anything? I always used to think the volume was so low on Isis/Romance on Biograph and needed a remaster :?:

Can this version be found on either Tell Tale Signs or The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2? Or is it another incarnation?

From another forum:

1 - The original Oh Mercy version (Touched By An Angel / Best Of Bob Dylan Vol 2 / Dylan (red box) / Side Tracks)
2 - The solo piano demo (Chronicles promo CD / Tell Tale Signs)
3 - The 'rockabilly' AKA 'Woman' version (Tell Tale Signs)
4 - The Brendan O'Brien remix (Greatest Hits Vol.3)
5 - MTV Unplugged version

Interesting, thanks. I'm familiar with the Rockin' Dopsy version from TTS (#3 on your list), where does the 'Woman' version moniker come from, some of the alternate lyrics?

Yeah : Dignity is a woman that knows ... Dignity is a woman unspoiled ... Dignity is a woman that's light ...

Is the version of "Mixed-Up Confusion" the same that's on the current (post-'97) version of Biograph? I.e. stereo version of the original single?

i think someone said that it is not, even though the liners say it is.

what does that make it? i hear there is an alternate take on Masterpieces. is it that?

I'm grabbing my info. from Searching for a Gem, but the way I'm reading this, the version on Masterpieces is *not* the same take/date as the original single.

Here is some of the pertinent info:

Quote:
Roger Ford says: "I think the key point in all of this is that there are two original 1962 takes which have formed the basis of all commercial releases of this song, not including the acetates:

Take 14 from 14 Nov 1962: this was released in mono as Dylan’s first single and in stereo on the revised 1997 edition of Biograph (R-0007)
Take 10 from 1 Nov 1962: the full original recording (in mono) finally appeared on the 2012 50th Anniversary Collection (R-0576)

The Masterpieces take is sourced from "Take 10"

More complete info here: http://www.searchingforagem.com/1960s/1962MixedUp.htm

Roger's meaning of "original" is confusing.

The original single reappeared on the Biograph CDs (not the vinyl).

The "Masterpieces" version reappeared on the Biograph vinyl and was included on the 50-year set as "take 10".

I haven't heard this new release.

Okay, I sort of understand the reasoning behind Side Tracks, but, out of all the tracks left off, how come there is no Baby Blue from Biograph? Not having this gem of a track is hugely disappointing, and there is no excuse given that the Biograph Visions is on Side Tracks.

Surely this is a mistake, pure and simple?

I believe that version is on BS4 (Royal Albert Hall).

That being said, I always thought of Biograph as an "album" and should have been included in the box in that way. I suppose the reasoning would support other greatest hits collections which they clearly did not want to do but Biograph imo is more than a greatest hits package.

Thanks. I guess this makes some kind of perverse sense . . .

speaking of "source," does anyone know if the vinyl is from an analogue or digital source? I'm going back and forth on whether to pick this up on Friday.

Yesterday evening and just again now, I was attempting to put a value on the Side Tracks package.
Ended up thinking something like, if it had been released in 1985 without the last 3 tracks of course, as Bootleg series 1, would it compare quality wise with what came 6 years later and of course it does.

I plan to change the tags on my album file from Side Tracks to
"BS zero" straight away. just coz thats the kinda guy I am

The Brendan O'Brien remix (Greatest Hits Vol.3): Not really a remix, but actually Dylan's original vocal with new backing tracks produced by Brendan O'Brien. Great version.

I get a little frustrated when people complain that this or that track wasn't included on Side Tracks. It was compiled with a specific remit, which it fulfils admirably: tracks which appeared on compilation albums but don't feature on official albums or The Bootleg Series. That's it. If the Complete Albums No. 2 box ever gets released then there might be a Side Tracks 2 which collects B-sides and other rarities but I don't think you can criticize the first volume for not being something it wasn't intended to be. Personally - as someone who never bought Biograph or the GHs, because I hate paying out for a bunch of songs I already own just to get a couple I don't - I bloody love my vinyl copy of Side Tracks (and am very grateful it was made available separately to the box set).
