I’ll remember you
When I’ve forgotten all the rest
You to me were true
You to me were the best
When there is no more
You cut to the core
Quicker than anyone I knew
When I’m all alone
In the great unknown
I’ll remember you

I’ll remember you
At the end of the trail
I had so much left to do
I had so little time to fail
There’s some people that
You don’t forget
Even though you’ve only seen ’m one time or two
When the roses fade
And I’m in the shade
I’ll remember you

Didn’t I, didn’t I try to love you?
Didn’t I, didn’t I try to care?
Didn’t I sleep, didn’t I weep beside you
With the rain blowing in your hair?

I’ll remember you
When the wind blows through the piney wood
It was you who came right through
It was you who understood
Though I’d never say
That I done it the way
That you’d have liked me to
In the end
My dear sweet friend
I’ll remember you

aawwwww, Llama.......When i hear Bob sing this song, i bawl like a baby.
I don't know if it's hearing Bob sing it....although, how can I divorce
Bob's songs from Bob's voice when I'm thinking about the songs? I can't.

-- if I even THINK of the line :
"In the end, my dear sweet friend, I"ll remember you" ....i get a lump in my throat.
....maybe i'm overly emotional ?

And i disagree with the premise of this thread... I don't think Bob has ANY bad rhymes.

Alouette - Yeah, I'm going slightly offtopic, but I actually prefer Journey Through Dark Heat to the song it's most compared to, Like A Rollin' Stone. Street Legal is desperately underrated (though it twice got 5 stars in Q Magazine), and I view it as a top-tier album; I don't know of any other Dylan album which is as strong on its opening and closing songs.

^ I agree, it's quite a delivery, so powerful it nearly kept me from tuning into the lyrics all these years,

but not this time. This time I heard them.

Just look at this.

Yes, and as with the lyric I quoted, you actually have to hear it sung to hear how it works.

The bridge that you travel on
goes to the Babylon
girl
With the rose in her hair

Another great line from that song-

Betrayed by a kiss on a cool night of bliss,
In the valley of the missing link...

The missing link ! (Back up singers)

You are right hollow horn.
Have to listen to Bob singing to truly appreciate.

A gal named Honey
Took my money
She was passing by

WTF? Why would you let the girl do it, Bob? Did she just take it or did you give it to her? And if she was only passing by, it couldn't possibly be a considerable sum of money, right? So why grumble about it?

Don't worry, though, as everything can be fixed live. Here are some suggestions to make the song more powerful:

A gal named Honey
Ate my baloney
At least she left the pie

OR

A gal named Honey
Was singing Sunny
Yesterday my life was filled with rain

And then you just go on and make it a Soon After Midnight/Sunny medley.

This is a lively topic. Feel compelled to defend winterlude. :)
song has good lyrics - premise for this thread maybe an oxymoron ?

'Love has a reason to shine
You’re the one I adore, come over here and give me more
Then Winterlude, this dude thinks you’re fine

Winterlude, Winterlude, my little apple
Winterlude by the corn in the field
'

(so pretty)

He's gone with the winterlude/dude rhyme because it's funny. It's a pretty song, light hearted, bit sly, very nice.

We should call it the 'Winterlude/this dude' rhyme. I'd say it's vERy lighthearted/off the cuff - but it's too exact a rhyme to expose our ears to it too liberally. And if I want to hear "ooo ooo, ooo ooo" I'll put on Sympathy for the Devil

love street legal.
You are right about the first and last songs being strong.

JTDH is magnificent.
also -we better talk this over, & senor.
I did not know about the LARS comparison, will check that out.

completely underrated - which adds to my appreciation of it.

Yes.
Changing Of The Guards, No Time To Think, Journey Through Dark Heat = absolute masterpieces
Senor, Baby Stop Crying, Is Your Love In Vain (lyrics apart) :) = great songs.

Of great interest:
'Street Legal' is Dylan's last album prior to recording 3 born again Christian albums.

:? Where Are You Tonight Is compared to Like a Rolling Stone? Where did you get that from? Also H61R has pretty good opening and closing tracks.

Shake Shake Mama:

Quote:
I get the blues for you baby when I look up at the sun
I get the blues for you baby when I look up at the sun
Come back here we can have some real fun

I really like the AA lyrics in this stanza, but I feel there's no payoff at the end.

kybo - The songs are musically similar just before the chorus. I think Bob was well aware of this, because there seems to be a lyrical referencing going on.

I like most of his "bad"/clumsy/etc. rhymes... The much maligned kelp/help is one of my favorites! It's naive, but I think that adds to the somewhat painful, vulnerable quality of the lyrics.

What bugs me isn't really a rhyme, but the repetition of exist/exist in BITW. I think it would work better if there was a similar repetion in the corresponding lines in the other verses, but as it is it's weirdly jarring every time I hear the song...
