BBC Radio 4 just played a snippet from a tape in their possession in which Dylan admitted he had been addicted to heroin.

Anyone know anything more about this tape? I think it was from an interview with Shelton.

Well, a transcript or even paraphrasing might help. The name of the radio program, too.

Radio 4 'Today' programme. The snippet was played shortly after 7 AM. I was in the shower, so I missed most of it. I heard Dylan (sounded like mid-60s Bob) talking about how he'd got himself off heroin. The presenter went on to say that Dylan had also revealed that he'd wanted to kill himself around the time everyone was calling him a genius, and that he takes his music a lot less seriously than others do, although there were no further excerpts from the tape to support this.

Tape is from 66. It's a recording of Shelton's aeroplane interview. Dylan is talking about kicking heroin habit - he specifically mentions heroin.

A film based on the tapes is currently in production, it seems.

Is that the same tape on which he says he never got hung up on anything because he's too smart?

Can heroin be used to wean people off this message board?

Bob says something along the lines that if it all gets too much he'll put a gun to his head and blow his brains out. He also says his songs will never take him to Heaven or bring him happiness.

Funny, in a way that doesn't tell you anything new, but it still made me want to cry.

Great thing to post for a birthday, BBC. :?
In any way, I vote for this just being Bob at his legend-building best. He told Shelton the same year that he used things but could handle them, and never got addicted. I think he just experimented in the way that many people did back then.

That said, we need the full tape(s).... or at least a podcast of that program. Did they focus on anything else than his "addiction"?

But, IF in fact this is true, it is all the more amazing that he is still alive and, er, kicking.

I heard this too and the BBC were taking it very seriously. However, it sounded to me as if he was just doing his usual interview bullshitting.

Seriously, when would that have been, if he'd already kicked it by early '66?
Nonbody that knew him in the early '60s ever mentioned it.

if you listen carefully, the interviewer is misunderstanding Bob strange speech patterns. He's actually either boasting about his heroic erection or the comical way the Japanese say hello in their diction.

Got to find something bad to say about him on the eve of his seventieth birthday,it can't all be good.

The story is repeated a few times. It is definitely there at about 2 Hours 22 mins.
