Another factor is compliance. The cantilever (the part that holds the needle) needs to be able to float so it will absorb the movement as it goes across the record. An older cartridge might have a needle in good shape but a locked cantilever, in which case it will not adjust itself to irregularities in the surface of the record. This will also cause damage to the groove walls.

Any needle designed for playing stereo records will have some vertical compliance. Those old warnings on 1960's records about playing stereo records with only a stereo needle and cartridge to avoid damage applies to what you're saying.

Old mono records have no modulations in the bottom of the groove, so vertical compliance wasn't an issue, until stereo 45 / 45 cutting (which requires that the playback stylus be compliant vertically and horizontally) came along. But original mono only record players and cartridges probably all bit the dust about 30-40 years ago. Unless someone has restored them.

It is? I have a spare copy.... want it? Dutch (for Europe) pressing.

Sure ! i haven't mailed much overseas - what would postage be roughly? I have a few doubles too: a not great but playable PG&BTK, an early press of New Morning, a gospel hand illustrated Saved, and a stereo Debut...

LP mailing pretty much worldwide from here is 7€ (ca 8.75 $). Let's take this to PM.
(You don't happen to have a spare TTL? )

I do, very long story, but I'm probably gonna hold onto that one. It's still sealed and a promo copy.

I read this was a rumor, if you treat them properly.

@steve: I'll take the non-promo then. No, good for you.... my UTRSky's are different pressings, too, but nothing rare enough to not give one of them away.

Anybody wondering about the depths/heights to which the vinyl hobby can sink/soar is encouraged to check out the forums at this wonderful site:

http://www.vinylengine.com/

There are, for example, whole tracts of server space devoted to discussing how to clean records properly.

Me, I'm more concerned about how to dispose of my Real Live and Under The Red Sky albums without damaging the planet further.

Good link, it made me realize how much I'd neglected the spindle thrust pad material

Yes I have vinyls approaching 40 plus years which have been played a lot but are still in pistine condition.
Six stacker players caused a lot of damage to vinyl.

has anyone heard this "beautiful" slow train needle drop ,to comment on it's sound quality ?
and what about this high resolution download (that stephenoxford speaks of), that takes two and a half hours to finish downloading
can you hear the difference ?

I'm sure the 24/96 rip sounds great if you have the kit to play it and do it justice.

Shame the album is a hateful pile of crap.

yes, it's brilliant, listen to the cowbell on Change My Way of Thinking.. Hi res is worth it; this was 16/44 redbook burnable to CD. Yes you can hear the difference. Don;t forget, despite Benny's protestations about the content STC is the best SOUNDING Dylan album ever, and in vinyl drip you hear it like it should be heard. Read the chapter "The Band that Clipped Itself to Death" in 'Perfecting Sound Forever' if you don't believe me!
