An early Marley song recorded in 1962 but not very widely released. Think Bob and Jacques had ever heard it?

One Cup of Coffee

One cup of coffee, then I'll go;
Though I just dropped by to let you know
That I'm leaving you tomorrow;
I'll cause you no more sorrow:
One cup of coffee, then I'll go

Very interesting discovery, though I'd wager he was probably more likely to have been aware of the Claude Gray original country hit that Marley is covering :

Yeah, that makes more sense. I was wondering if Marley had wrote it or if might have been a cover - he was only a teenager when he recorded it - but a quick search didn't turn up anything and one of those song lyric sites with the annoying ring tone ads said that Marley wrote it so I figured it had to be true. :)

Don't discount the possibility that Dylan has a time machine, wrote the song, took it back to Claude Gray who then plagiarized it for his own use. These things happen sometimes.

Many have made the same mistake with those whack-assedly wrong 'CROSS THE GREEN MOUNTAIN lyrics that have been making the rounds for years on those sites!

But seriously, thanks for pointing this one out! So very Dylan!

Here is another Dylan/Marley connection. A very youthful Bob Marley and the Wailers doing their version of 'Like a Rolling Stone' :)

You get an old cup of coffee, but thick.

I don't know about this song - it's not really close enough. People are always drinking coffee and going places.

In One more cup of coffee - How many cups did Bob have before he left? He must've had to take a wicked piss when he got down to the valley.

Clearly, Dylan's song is not a copy of or even directly based on the Claude Gray song. But it seems equally clear (to me, anyway) that it was an influence, much like Hank Williams' DRIFTING TOO FAR FROM SHORE or Gene Vincent's BABY BLUE or Gene Pitney's SOMETHING'S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART, et al.

What do I know but considering his choice of title he surely knew about that one and also, I think, Gordon Lightfoot's Second cup of coffee:

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day
I'm thinking of the lady who got lost along the way
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day
The room was filled with laughs as we sang the night away
But my sleep was filled with dreaming of the wrongs that I had done
And the gentle sweet reminder of a daughter and a son

Sitting alone, my friends have all gone home
They never were around when i needed them
Thinking of girls with their fingers in my curls
Too young to understand how love begins

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the dawn
The radio is playin' a soft country song
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

Sitting alone, my friends have all gone home
You never know when they'll come droppin' in
Thinking of girls with their fingers in my curls
Too young to understand how love begins

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day
I'm thinking of the lady who got lost along the way
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

I can also see echoes of This Dream of You and Visions of Johanna in the lyrics to that song. Dylan seems to be constantly working with the material supplied by popular songs ( and I don't mean pop songs).

True enough, but the Lightfoot song came out six years after Visions! Although, as effort indicated, One More Cup Of Coffee would be a smartly alert title, I think it's possible that Dylan was influenced only subconsciously by these coffee songs.

Let's not forget Sinatra singing about too much coffee in Brazil (late 40's).
Cream even had a coffee song found on 'Fresh Cream'

Interesting that he didn't play either the Marley or the Lightfoot song when he did Coffee as his theme in Theme Time Radio Hour in May 2006.

Pretty suspicious, huh?

I don't think Marley sung on this. It's clearly Bunny Wailer. Marley at the time had left the wailers to stay in the US.
The Wailers did not use to play the backing at the time./ Most likely it's the Skatalites or some other great instrumental ska-rocksteady band...

You're not the first to realize it....there is a connection between Marley and Dylan, no doubt.

no offense ....

True, but in interviews you can see he's not infallible, and I think his subconscious does a lot of work for him - so it's possible that this time it wasn't a conscious tip of the hat.
