Johanna Parker, it is time you fix your record player then! I mean, you buy tons of vinyls and cannot even listen to them

The turntable is fine, but the speakers.... they stop speaking after half a side.

It's the newer ones that are worth most, since not so many of them were pressed and most are out of print. Original GAIBTY, WGW, TOOM and "LAT" are especially sought after on vinyl.

thats correct TOOM i´ve never even seen other than on the internet....GAIBTY i think i got a hold on soon!! i friend of mine got it,and he´s not even in to Dylan,i showed him that it has been reissued on vinyl now so he´s considering to let me buy the original...:-)

A few months ago I donated everything recorded prior to Before the Flood to the local library along the CDs as well. Figured someone may get some use or enjoyment out of them that way.

This article is on the Main Page...Neil Young discussing the poor sound currently being
recorded.

About one year ago, i bought a CD of Van Morrison's " Moondance"...an album that I
loved, but had never purchased on Cd.....I was stunned when i listened to the CD...much of the
beautiful music that i remembered from the record was not there!

Unkle Neil is onto something....alot of the music somehow goes missing in the new releases.

I've been wondering about this for a long time, as you can see from this old link.
Some posters indicated that the poor quality was due to a flaw in the manufacturing of some CD's. ????

Yeah, it's crazy how the newer Dylan albums are so pricey....

Makes me glad I paid £12 each for Love & Theft and Modern Times. World Gone Wrong and Good As I Been To You I paid a little more for in eBay, but nothing like 3 figures (even considering the Euro conversion)!! Together Through Life was also nastily overpriced when it came out, but I succumbed and bought the vinyl. And Time Out Of Mind I ordered in to my local record store about the time Love & Theft came out. I paid £18 for it and felt I was being overcharged then! (Hmm, I may be something of a cheapskate.)

Recently saw a near-mint Modern Times in a second-hand shop I go to regularly, and it was on the wall as a rarity for £80! I thought it was a joke.

Having said that I went to buy the new Black Keys album yesterday, only to be told that the vinyl (new) is £27. Er, what? That's criminal. Record labels are so dumb sometimes. I was told by the shopkeep (sheepishly though, he knew it was a rip-off) that it's 'heavy vinyl' and you get a copy of the CD with it.

In that case I'll take two.

....man, i have a bunch of old Dylan LP's ....are they really worth that much ?

No, they're not WORTH that much. As long as someone is willing to fork over that much, then that's what they'll sell for. I wouldn't pay it, but plenty of folks will.

Only a few are worth that kind of money, mainly the 90's releases TOOM in particular. Love and theft is pricey.

With regards to the 60's and 70's stuff they can be picked up in record shops for a less than £10 or so. Only rare special versions are worth any real dosh. I picked up 10 Dylan vinyls for less than £50 in one swoop.

Slightly off-topic, but a regular release that sells for quite a lot is the Hearts Of Fire soundtrack on CD.

"Shop around" is always good advice - I recently saw someone selling a CD I'd put out on my own label (not of me, but some quite rare music) on Amazon for £80 - when one can still get it direct from me for less than a tenner brand new! I wrote a 'review' of it there with my address and subsequently sold quite a few to some very grateful punters. I'd guess that in relation to inflation vinyl is probably not all that pricey really; back in the 60's I recall a '45 being 7/6d (37.5p in new money) - compared to property, or petrol (which it is made from, kind of) it hasn't gone up nearly as much... although twenty odd quid for a new album does sound like a lot, the real rip-off is CD's which cost next to nothing to make and are sold in shops like Virgin for fifteen quid! What's more those are the shops that demand the highest discount from distributors.... as usual it is the artist that ends up scraping around for the last few pence after everyone else has had their slice.

Of course '78s weren't made of petroleum byproducts but from Beetles! Brian Epsteins Shellac Farm made him a very rich man.
