Among my Dylan all-time favorite songs, his one is a precious gift and this performance doesn't disappoint.

Damn the bootlegs hit quick as a mofo huh? The show wasn't even 24 hours ago  . Yeah I loved the whole show, and it was cool to hear him play Dignity as I know he doesn't break it out all that often

....and the bonus tracks.
I received it as a freebie back at the old DylanPool. Whoever it was who gave it to me, thanks! :)

I must say that the Dignity from Rochester was indeed really strong and good. I love how he laughs a bit after the "Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed" line

I've gotta second this. I've been listening to this forgotten gem in my head, unfortunately following
these recent political wars....

Bob's really animated and digging into the vocals on this version. Every line carries some weight here with him.
Perhaps it's also the gorgeous arrangement that accompanies our man...Goddamn, do these guys sound good here...
I miss this kind of music....

Just a re-up of this fiery rendition...
It is probably the best version running but this thread proves that
that is quite debatable:)

This is a pretty incredible performance. It's extremely strong in terms of its powerhouse sound.
I forget how very muscular that 2003 band was.
Bob sounds so possessed here!!

HAMBURG - 17 OCT 2003
Of all the great versions' this one is pretty tough to beat.
Certainly echos the hard driving, go-for-it-Dylan I (still) crave.
It'll rev you up, guaranteed, IMHO.
Perhaps the definitive version!

Been thinking about this song a lot after this past year...

Here's a fantastic version from 2001. It's so fun to hear a committed Bob
to this one, a song that's been pretty elusive for him.
I love the playfulness of the guitars, a time when Bob just plunked around
while Charlie/ Larry killed it...
Check this one out:

I don't think Bob was ever happy with any of the versions of Dignity that we have to choose from. The studio and MTV live performances have never lived up to the potential of the song itself, imo. BS-8 has the best version which is the one with Bob at the piano. Tell-tale signs has a few Oh Mercy gems that I prefer over the originals from 1989.

Anyways..

That shlt dick prick James Diamano or whatever killed any momentum or desire I think for Bob to spend more time on Dignity. If memory serves, it was a ugly drawn out court battle where Mr Diamano insisted our Bob had ripped off Dignity from him. It really didn't help at the time that all the good songs Bob was writing weren't being released (he kept shelving his best work!). UTRS and the other early 90s releases didn't show case a brilliant literary Nobel Laureate.

Anyway thankfully that troll lost. With Bob and the boys putting so much energy into new arrangements, I'd love to hear what the ol bard could do with Dignity now.

Fascinating for me to see this thread updated today: I was just thinking about Dignity the other night. My father and I were watching a basketball game and we got to talking about Pistol Pete Maravich. He played years before my time, so I have only seen highlights, but I mentioned that it felt like an injustice that one of the most talented offensive players to ever play basketball spent most of his prime seasons on an expansion team that could not make the postseason and compete for a title. On the other hand, playing in New Orleans with the Jazz is a definite aspect of Maravich’s mystique: his free-wheeling style was suited perfectly to a team with nothing to lose in a city of groovy music and supernatural mystery. Anyhow, because Dylan pops into my mind often, I mentioned he’d been inspired to write ‘Dignity’ by the sudden death of Maravich. I thought it was a shame that the song wasn’t a hit, if only because more casual Dylan fans like my father had not heard what I believe to be a brilliant song of characters and images in the lyrical landscape of ‘Chimes of Freedom,’ ‘Desolation Row,’ ‘Changing of the Guards,’ and on. I have another personal connection with the song. When I was first getting curious about Dylan, ‘Dignity’ was one of the first songs I randomly downloaded to my dorm-room desktop. There it sat, an icon on my home-screen, the only Dylan song I knew besides ‘Like a Rolling Stone.’ For all I knew it was one of his best known tracks. I loved it. And for that brief moment in my life, the song was something out of time: I had no idea when it had been recorded or released. It was just this awesome song that sounded like this experienced soul treating me to an evening of drinks and visitations to his favorite neighborhood haunts.

When the song, and Pistol Pete, occurred to me the other night, images of Maravich driving up the court, his dribble steady, his limbs flailing, his hair flopping on his head, flashed in my mind accompanied by that sparkling slide guitar and throbbing drumbeat. I realized the connection to Maravich was not so much in the lyrics but the instrumentation. This song was trying to move and groove in a similar style to Pistol Pete on the court. I also made the connection between the New Orleans Jazz and ‘Oh Mercy’ being recorded in New Orleans. Could that have been more than a coincidence? Did Dylan have a completely different, funky vision for that album which was abandoned with ‘Dignity?’ It seemed like an obvious thought, but I had never had it before!

I think, in the verses of this song, is one of the best vocal melodies, and accompanying structure, that Dylan ever made.

Dignity was the only reason to pick up Greatest Hits Vol. 3 upon its release in 1994.
