he cant contain himself from going on a tangent on the Dylan expert who wrote that awful Bob Encylopedia. when the moderator tries to steer him away from the topic, for a minute i thought he was going to get up and leave.

he insists that Blonde on Blonde was done on one long session. i dont know that hes not right.

Do you still have the photo, or is it too incriminating to post?

Has Al Kooper ever talked about Bob Johnston? Has Bob Johnston ever talked about Al Kooper?

Didn't Al get into a blogging fight with Michael Gray a few years back, in which Suze Rotolo sprang to his, Al's, defence? Can't for the life of me remember what it was about. Clues, anyone?

Al Kooper vs Michael Gray?

Dylan-bore deathmatch!

"Michael Gray.. he's my least favourite Dylan writer.." That quote is the best thing attributable to Al since his organ swirls on LARs!!!

Final word from dear old Suze, bless her:

AL KOOPER said...
he wrote that he hoped I'd die, and soon. If he really is proud of writing that, I'm embarrassed for him.

MIKEY - YA LEFT OUT THAT I WAS QUOTING DYLAN AND YOU MISQUOTED BOTH OF US. I DIDNT WRITE THAT- BOB DYLAN WROTE IT. SO THEREFORE I CANT BE PROUD OF WRITING IT - SO SAVE YOUR EMBARASSMENT FOR THIS:

Here's a note Suze Rotolo asked me to send you based on your Herlad retort. She DOES NOT want you to have her email address:

Subject: Gray's Atrocity
To: Michael Gray,

When dealing with "Bob Dylan Experts" I tend to be direct but polite. I felt it worked best---although biographers consider a polite refusal 'an interview', sellers of forged letters ignore me and you seem to think I was being helpful ---so maybe not.

The ' Bob Dylan Encyclopedia' is inaccurate to the point of hilarity (in my case) and also perpetuates hearsay, innuendo and slander (also in my case). But rest assured I used impolite language with close friends.

The point Al Kooper is trying to make, and I agree with 100%, is that your tome, in direct polite terms, is inaccurate, misleading and unreliable as a reference tool. Right up there with Wikipedia.

Truly,
Suze Rotolo

"The problem with history is, the folks who were there ain't talking. And
the ones who weren't there, you can't shut em up."
- Tom Waits

Thanks for posting this^. The Waits quote sums it up. But will these 'experts' ever take a backward step? Don't hold your breath.

What really turned me against Gray was the Dylan birthday conference in Bristol last year when he denigrated and insulted Paul Williams (who is in no state to reply!) ; Let's just take stock on who's achieved what:

Paul Williams: the greatest writing on Dylan as a performance artist
Al Kooper; the greatest riff in history, Blood Sweat & Tears, Lynyrd Skynyrd &c.
Michael Gray: Indulgent ramblings disguised as an Encyclopedia.

I rest my case.

much ado about not much

listen to the tunes and tune out the minutiae unless you're making money with it

Kooper's "Backstage Passes" is a very funny read although I believe it only in the sense that I know how he feels about this or that; otherwise plenty of rock'n'roll tall tales, oral tradition or whatnot

I had a Michael Gray book once, it had loads of awesome pictures of Bob in it so I cut them out.

Don't remember the writing much.

I use the Bob Dylan Encyclopedia as a footstool so my little one can reach the toilet. No lie. It is only moderately spattered, if anyone wants it.

There are parts of the other big book that I quite liked (Song and Dance Man...the section on Blind Willie--Under the Red Sky and Nursery Rhyme)--it's been a while since I've read it.

I can't quite get this video to load. Looking forward to it when I achieve success.
