When the man is singing, his facial expressions have always interested me. Obviously, he isn't expressive: doesn't smile when something is good or frown when it's said (after all, he's a singer, not an actor). Often time he breaks out into a toothy grimace (not a smile though).
The only person who reminds me is this guy (who is obviously WAY more histrionic in other senses):

It's as if the phraseology and rythmns their voices are being asked to make are so specific that the mouth ends up in odd positions. Sort of awesome to watch.

That's a great post... whilst listening to Dylan CD's I often used to close my eyes and try and imagine what contorted facial expressions he would be making when recording the CD... however, I had to stop doing this as it became very dangerous when I was driving.

He seems to smile when he likes a phrase - even if the subject matter is dead-assed sad. Hard Rain shows this to great effect--which is why all Dylan concert footage should be shot with the same almost constant extreme close up of Bob Dylan's face. I know some said it was narcissistic in that film, but really, that's where the action is.

Allen Ginsberg wrote a great descriptive paragraph about Bob Dylan's face when he's singing, Rolling Thunder era. Can't remember where to find it?

Some of the 1966 facial expressions are classic. Sort of like really exagerated teeth-bearing facials.

I hate singers that smile when they are singing, they always look smug.

Yes. Think about friendly smiling Dylan when singing Hattie Carroll.

The older he's got the less natural his mannerisms, both vocal and facial, have become. The motorcycle crash and subsequent sabbatical form the first great leap in that process. Ambition and career arc, either side of that period, provide the contrast that explain it. It's also about the difference between really wanting to do something, and doing something for any other reason than that.

Drugs messed his face up.

I doubt Dylan does much of anything he doesn't want to at this point. Dylan's "less natural facial mannerisms" are part of what makes him an interesting performer. And that's nothing new, really.

Actually seeing Dylan adds so much to a performance. Even the little things, like how he leans into a microphone, can make an impact sometimes.

Very enjoyable cover of Beyond Here Lies Nothing... his Dylan voice needs a little work but the impression is getting there

Seeing Bob's expressions up close in Chicago made the concert even better. I had always gotten bad seats so this time I splurged on Hot Band tixs and it was awesome. Even with the lights down between songs I could see him moving his mouth (in an odd way), taking off his hat messing with his hair, even he blew his nose and threw the kleenex on the ground and stepped on it. Well, well worth the cost and I will do it again just to see the little nuances I missed far away.

If you weren't able to get there first to pick it up and lick it, I'm sure there'll be other opportunities. Are there any Never Ending Latrine Attendant vacancies, I wonder? Just trying to help.
