Empire Burlesque is underrated by almost everyone.

Excellent songwriting, spirited vocals, fun lyrics. It does not belong in the same lowly depths as Kol and DitG.

Maybe its better than KOL and DITG but it is properly rated. The overdubbed vocals and the synth ruin it. Maybe if it had the BLS 1-3 versions of When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky, it would be underrated. Dark eyes is the only bright spot off the released version. Everything else could have been recorded better.

I agree to some extent, but I think the rest of the album is very enjoyable.

Remember this: Most of EB got major live play from Bob in 1986 and to a lesser extent 1987. Whereas Knocked Out Loaded was almost unheard from and the same from Down in the Groove, aside from Silvio (which stuck around for a long time for some reason, beginning in 1988). I think Bob played 'When the Night..." 'Emotionally Yours' 'I'll Remember You ' and 'Seeing the Real You at Last' at most shows in 1986. 'Trust Yourself' and 'Clean Cut Kid' got lots of play as well. Then the album was on and off throughout the NET, with 'Never Gonna Be The Same Again' popping up from time to time. And 'Tight Connection' as a highlight of the Supper Club.

All this is to say that Bob liked playing the EB songs quite a bit, for whatever thats worth.

I have listened to most of these so often that I find I sing or play them more than I listen nowadays. For example I played 'Desire' recently and 'Isis' sounded incredible. When you play them less frequently they really strike home:

H'way '61
Blood on the tracks
BIABH
Times they are ...
Blonde on blonde
John Wesley Hardin
Desire
Freewheelin
TOOM
Modern Times
Infidels
Planet waves
Street legal
Oh Mercy
Another side of...
Love & theft
Basemant Tapes complete
Slow Train
Shot of love
Under the red sky
Bob Dylan
Good as I been ...
World gone wrong
Empire Burlesque
TTL
Tempest
New morning
Nashville skyline
Pat G and the kid
Self Portrait
DITG
Knocked out and...
Dylan
Saved
CITH

Very difficult, but here's my attempt. I found the mid table most difficult to arrange. I sort of know my faves and least faves but trying to arrange those which I'm sort of undecided about was very difficult. The order of them could change like the weather!

1, Blonde On Blonde
2, John Wesley Harding
3, Highway 61 Revisited
4, Blood On The Tracks
5, Bringing It All Back Home
6, Time Out Of Mind
7, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
8, "Love And Theft"
9, Desire
10, Oh Mercy
11, Another Side Of Bob Dylan
12, Slow Train Coming
13, Nashville Skyline
14, New Morning
15, Planet Waves
16, Street-Legal
17, The Times They Are A-Changin'
18, Modern Times
19, The Basement Tapes
20, Tempest
21, Good As I Been To You
22, World Gone Wrong
23, Infidels
24, Bob Dylan
25, Together Through Life
26, Under The Red sky
27, Self Portrait
28, Shadows In The Night
29, Fallen Angels
30, Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid
31, Shot of Love
32, Saved
33, Empire Burlesque
34, Knocked Out Loaded
35, Down in the Groove
36, Dylan
37, Christmas in the Heart

A lot of fantastic lists.

If some sadistic torturer forced me to have one album only,

it would be, 'Bringing It All Back Home'.

Good point, but on Self Portrait there are loads of covers, the first album has only a couple of originals, Dylan is all covers and DITG and KOL are not exactly all self written!

Will that go down a place when you include Under The Red Sky in your listing of original albums? I don't know where Triplicate will go in my list, but I suspect it will be lower down than Shadows In The Night.

I don't do albums any more and haven't done for a long time. Whenever I want to listen to a Dylan song
I invariably find myself listening to his early stuff becuase that's where the really good stuff came from.

I see that Love and Theft seems to be highly thought of by many of his fans but my recollection of that
album was that it was ok but nothing special. Maybe one or two of yous can recommend certain tracks from
that album to walk me past my ignorance?

Correct - "Love & Theft" is nothing special. But now that you have asked, be prepared for all sorts of nutters to claim otherwise.
