You miss the point if you take it literally. All relationships are like this.

I agree he probably had final say, but it was probably something like.....

Producer/director/Bob's guy: "hey it's a video about a stormy relationship between a guy and a chick"

Bob: "ya, sure. Whatever. It's all good."

I hope this is not just a marketing strategy... It would be so disgusting. I think this kind of explicit violence is more pornographic than sex scenes, and this is the kind of cheap scandalous video made just for been banned in tvs, so people talk about it. Sad, again, if they tought they need a video like this to made the song more relevant, anyway...

whoo...as long as the guy tries to kill the broad and she beats the shit out of him, then repents for it at the end to only start the cycle over again

That video sucks. The interior looks like it was filmed in some hipster's apartment in Williamsburg, not some dysfunctional wino's motel den. It probably was. This is vapid, fake garbage, and poorly filmed... it's got no atmosphere, attitude, or feeling. You can do so much with so little on film... but that would take a director with some vision; a rare thing these days.

i can't remember if i comment this thread before, but dylan must approve every video. this reflects his attitude to women, it is nothing new.

First of all, i don't think the song and the video compliment each other well, at all.

Second, I do think it's a little over the top and unnecessary. It's not that imaginative or constructive to merely demonstrate an episode of an abusive relationship. It could have been done so much better.

Gypsygal could have made something much better, I am sure of that.

The thing that piss me off is that he said not long ago that this album was realistic, non symbolic, so it means that this videoclip does not means anything, it has not message, just violence and stupidity. I wanted to say something in bobdylan.com but the web does not work well for me... :x

Indeed. It's not the subject matter that bothers me - telling the story of an abusive relationship could be interesting - although I don't understand what an abusive relationship has to do with the song. What bothers me is how crass and and poor the storytelling is. It's just poor film, unimaginatively realized ("real life" my @ss), and poorly paced to the music. Show me images, symbols, and feeling, shot with some sort of attitude - not this half-realized crap that's being lazily passed off as "true-to-life" reportage. This director should've looked a little harder at Bruce Davidson, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, or even Weegee or Brassai.

I worry about some of you. If you don't feel it, I guess you just don't feel it. Makes me wonder what you hear in Bob Dylan's music.

Also, I don't like how you can hear the sounds of the action over the actual song. Who does that? Weird.

I'm stunned. I don't normally criticize Bob publicly, other than the wig of course, but I can't tell you how much I despise this video. Gratuitous violence from start to finish... and no, this isn't what any sort of normal relationship is like. This is what sick men that should be locked up are like. And women that are so abused they can't think properly anymore. The ending is horrific. I'm a sensitive person; I found this video very upsetting and I'm really sorry I watched it even once. The email from Sony should have come with a warning about the violence. I'm very disappointed in Bob and his people.

Three pages of utter shite but not one link to 'the' video. I've seen the beyond here lies nothing video, just three minutes of black and white stills so this is something else.

One of the worst and most inappropriate pieces of shit his name has ever been associated with, and that's saying something. Appalling. Moronic.

Spoiled the song for me now too.
