Nominations for Dylan's strangest lyrics? - not surreal strange, but just odd strange... and maybe a little off.

e.g. Lenny Bruce:

"Never robbed any churches nor cut off any babies' head."

also Abandoned Love:

"My heart is telling me, I love you but you're strange"

yeah, I was wondering myself. Maybe it's the Cotton belt (like up South)? Well, doesn't make much sense, either... :)

as for me, Gates of Eden is just that...weird lyrics...

gray flannel dwarf? shoeless hunter who's gone deaf? WTF?

and that's a shame, because where I do seem to get it, it's great...

I say, "How much you want for that?" I go into the store
The man says, "Three dollars", "All right", I say, "Will you take four?"

I think Disease of Conceit may be my all-time least favorite song of his.

I agree, Claudette. Both are great lines, and I don´t find anything weird about them...

I think The Basement Tapes have so many strange lyrics. Million Dollar Bash, Clothes Line Saga:

Mama, of course, she said, "Hi!"
"Have you heard the news?" he said, with a grin,
"The Vice-President's gone mad!"
"Where?" "Downtown." "When?" "Last night."
"Hmm, say, that's too bad!"
"Well, there's nothin' we can do about it," said the neighbor,
"It's just somethin' we're gonna have to forget."
"Yes, I guess so," said Ma,
Then she asked me if the clothes was still wet.

On The Road Again from Bringing It All Back Home, and many of the songs from Another Side Of.

Well, again, I'm not talking about surreal, deliberately weird.
More like this...

"He could've sold insurance, owned a restaurant or bar
Could've been an accountant or a tennis star."

I love the "sucked the milk out of a thousand cows" line. hink about it for a second: the milk you've been drinking in your coffee or whatever over the last couple of years has most likely been "sucked out of a thousand cows."

I always thought those lines from The Basement Tapes were like “dummy lyrics," words that come into Dylan's head as he was making the music but not proper lyrics that he actually wrote. (Didn't Paul McCartney call "Yesterday" "Hardboiled Eggs" for weeks before he actually found a better title?)

While we're on that subject...

"Hey! Who could your lover be?
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Who could your lover be?
Let me eat off his head so you can really see!"

I'm sure that's a devastating put down on Neptune.

I really have a problem whenever Bob's lines leave the impression he really despises science and technology.
Especially the Charles Darwin verse in High Water. I don't think there is any doubt which point of view the writer is open to, and that he sides with the judge. Wrong-headed. Brilliantly sung though
