I don't think he really used Bob much at all.
The problem the Wallflowers have(had) is one of
overexposure. They got too big too fast in 1996 and
built a following based on a pop audience. Not very loyal.
Jake's face was all over MTV, VH1, radio etc. They never took time
to build a real grassroots following and now are dead in
the water. Yes he is talented, but he isn't and hasn't ever braking/
broken new ground. Rather, his songs seem based on the
stardard pop/classic-rock format. "Asleep at the Wheel" off their
self titled debut showcases his songwriting talent.

JD seems to be a real talent to this poster. Writing tunes with self respect is kinda hard I'd think.

The kid has some talent but I don't think he's anything special...I would rate him the same way I'd rate Julian Lennon...they both fall about 1,000,000 miles short of their fathers.

I think he's really an underappreciated artist. His last record, Red Letter Days, was his most bold and agressive, and completely ignored. His voice is instantly recognizable, and his lyrics have real depth to them in my opinion:

"I was first-born to a parade
that follows in rows
down a narrow cold black river
faceless shadows
movin' slow"

-I've Been Delivered, from Breach.

I think he's talented both as a performer and songwriter. I think he made a conscious decision not to pursue fame in the manner that the industry requires -- constant touring/promotion -- literally binding yourself to the corporate industry wheel of fortune. He's got a family and having a life w/them is probably more important to him than being a huge sucksess.

(imo) he got his taste of fame and saw/understood first hand how it works. I think the last things he wants is to be the "next Bob Dylan". I think if he wanted that -- the industry cld have made it happen for him.

It seems he did his share of dues paying touring prior to hitting it big. From what I heard he made of point of not letting people know he was Bob Dylan's kid. It seemed to me that the industry wanted to capitalize on his being Bob's son. Whether he consciously decided to let them take advantage of that angle for his "hit" album or not, I cant say, but when he made it a point to go in his own creative direction (which I found quite interesting in of itself) the industry seemed to abandon him. Such is life. He probably wld have been much bigger had he not been Bob's kid. At any rate -- if he was in it for the music and not the fame (which is likely) big stadiums, endless touring, crazed fans, a demanding media -- well, I think it wld be easy to pass on that.

In my opinion, he has the soul of an artist. He has a unique vision, which he is capable of expressing. How and when he decides to express himself -- as with most artists -- I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
