lewis, let's review: you joined 10 months ago and your contribution to spiritual and intellectual discourse so far has been limited to 2 short questions about performances at the Obama inauguration and 5 complaints about the quality of posting on this board. LET US NOT TALK FALSELY NOW, indeed.

Well, Matchstriker you have a point. I am being a hypocrite. I should contribute not just complain. I should try and alter the situation by posting topics of interest to me and hope for the best. I have been doing this in private conversations with other members. I will post out in the open. Look for topics that deal with my curiousity on a number of subjects. For example:

If one of his(Dylan) greatest attributes beyond the power of his lyrics and music is his fearless independance. Why is it that throughout his career fans and critics want to lock him into a place where they feel comfortable.

Dylan is a song writer and performer, yet fans want to hold him to a moral/ethical standard above anything they themselves do not live up to.

Given the depth of his exploration of life and relationships why do fans often behave like Britney Spears fans. Am I wrong to believe there is a differance between the import of these two performers and that his fans should have (dare I say without provoking a scatalogical diatribe) more adultlike discussions?

As an older fan(I attend 8-10 concerts a year) I have become for partial to his newer music than his older music. It speaks for directly to me now. Many friends prefer his older material. Is this because they prefer to remember their pasts rather than confront their futures or is this just a question of taste.

Why do fans chose to get so angry at him and one another for divergent points of view.

Why does the critical point of view of any particular song, album, concert resort to "it sucks" rather than deal with it in a more informed and human way.

There must be some unifying element that binds us all together or am I missing the point. Is this forum just a form of facebook or twitter where people gather to just hangout?

Anyway, thank you Matchstriker for your simple, clear and informed repuke of my previous post.

I look forward to your response.

I think there are some interesting topics for discussion here. I also think that you should bear in mind that many of the members you may be critical of are people who've been here for quite awhile, who have raised many points of discussion and debate and who, at times, weary of it and are looking for comic relief or a new slant on an old subject. Or they're just bored and telling 'in' jokes. This too shall pass.

It's a lot of fun to use the search engine here or to click "search users posts" from someone's profile. You might be pleasantly surprised at the level of commentary by some of the members you've formerly disparaged. This place and it's membership runs the gamut of human experience, education and output.

Happy hunting, and I look forward to many enlightening threads. :)

We said Match striker. We all approach this forum from a different perspective.
At times I want to be serious, other times less serious, it just depends on the thread and how I feel. And it can vary from post to post .
As three legged man said to me a few months ago when I was allowed to return from what is loosely termed a holiday, "have fun".

With all the certainty that I can muster, I feel Bob's spirit here....in the hedgerows of General Discussion...alighting upon a stump in Off Topic...or simply taking a leak in Rare Recordings.

Lewis, you raise a lot of valid and interesting points. Sorry no one is taking them seriously. I'm going to give it a stab.

I think the reason people try to lock Dylan into one place is because they become enamored with his work, art, music, persona where it is and people are afraid of change....afraid of losing something.

I agree people want to hold him to a higher moral/ethical standard, I guess it has something to do with his early music and the myth that was built around him.

I'm also an older fan and can really relate to his recent work, but when I put on his old stuff I feel the same way, it really speaks to me.

I think the reason fans get so angry with one another is just because that's how everyone reacts to everything these days, a lot of hostility over nothing...calm down people.

I don't have such great "powers of expression or thoughts so sublime" I guess that's why I love Dylan's music so much. So, I probably did not explain myself that well. There are many on this board much mor eloquent than I.

PS Lighten up and enjoy the banter.
