Working backwards chronologically:

Hard Rain - remaster
Desire - quad mix
Blood On The Tracks - half-speed remaster
John Wesley Harding - mono
Blonde On Blonde - SACD remaster / mono
Highway 61 Revisited - DCC remaster
Bringing It All Back Home - mono
Times They Are A-Changin' - mono
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - mono
Bob Dylan - mono

Put those in your backpack and off you go.

So, BoB is worth having in stereo and mono, h61 stereo, and BIABH mono? These are the ones I've considered pursuing both types....

Without talking about live cd and bootleg series.

Blood on the tracks,
Blonde on blonde,
The freewheelin' Bob Dylan,
The times they are a-changin'
Another side of Bob Dylan,
Bringing it all back home,
Desire,
Highway 61 revisited,
Modern times,
Bob Dylan (1962),

Can someone please not pm me a link to the BoB SACD, I really haven't been dying to hear it or anything. Benny's post brings up a lot of points about which version you need to hear for each album. The mono BiaBH is overall the best but there are a few tracks that benefit from the recent stereo remix. While the quad/half speed upgrades of BoTT and Desire are good, there's nothing particularly wrong with the original releases to me. Anyway, here's my list.

1. ''Love & Theft"
2. Blood On The Tracks
3. Tell Tale Signs
4. Live 1975
5. Blonde On Blonde
6. Time Out of Mind
7. Bringing It All Back Home
8. Live 1966
9. Highway 61 Revisted
10. Street Legal

The last three are sort of superfluous because at that stage it's really just a cavalcade of albums I love. Freewheeling, Times, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Desire, Hard Rain, Slow Train, Infidels, Oh Mercy, Modern Times could all be on there but I had to limit my choices. After that we enter the pleasant but not mind blowing tier and then the 'oh dear he's lost it tear' followed by the 'if it wasn't for Brownsville Girl I'd shoot you' tier.

I hate making TOP lists and ranking things but I'll give it a shot (studio albums):

1. Blonde on Blonde
2. Street-Legal
3. Blood on the Tracks
4. Desire
5. Planet Waves
6. John Wesley Harding
7. Bringing It All Back Home
8. Another Side of
9. Highway 61 Revisited
10. Knocked Out Loaded

I guess you could change the order of the last 4 and it wouldn't matter. I really thought about including "Infidels". Guess that would be at 11. position or so. And a part of me wanted to rank "Highway 61" higher but... I dunno, something crucial is missing from it even though I've always loved it, maybe it's the lack of love songs.

4. The Times They Are A-changin’
5. Highway 61 Revisited
6. Blood on the Tracks
7. Another Side Of Bob Dylan

9. John Wesley Harding
10. The Basement Tapes

1. Blonde on Blonde
2. Blood on the Tracks
3. Highway 61 Revisited
4. Bringing it All Back Home
5. Freewheelin (Could be anything here, really)

1. Blonde On Blonde
2. John Wesley Harding
3. Blood On The Tracks
4. Street Legal
5. Another Side Of Bob Dylan
6. Love & Theft
7. Bootleg Series Vol 5; Live 1975

Of course the Rolling Thunder is the best music and tour ever created, but Blonde on Blonde needs to go number 1, because in terms of albums and songs it'll never beaten. But The Rolling Thunder Revue only fit there.

What's the point? What's the best album, country, sports team, film, book etc. Name the best 250 countries in the world, the top ten numbers, letters, the best holiday destinations. This stuff is usually put out to sell stuff. So, are we delighted when others agree with us? If they don't they just don't understand, do they? Us and Them. It's al right, ma....

In a sort of rough order, holistically, and including only studio albums (no live albums of bootlegs)

Freewheelin (just because I sit there, listen to the whole thing and curse, asking why the hell can't I write something this good? - because he was no older than 21 when he wrote these songs (how can you be 21 and write Hard Rain? How?))
Love and Theft
Blonde on Blonde
JWH
Blood on the Tracks
Desire
H61
Oh Mercy
Time Out of Mind
Bringing It All Back Home

(But there's something on every album)

15 is as little as I could condense it down to. And I refuse to even try putting it in order so I stuck to chronological.

1. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
2. The Times They Are A-Changin'
3. Bringing It All Back Home
4. Highway 61 Revisited
5. Blonde on Blonde
6. Bootleg Series Vol. 4, Live 1966
7. John Wesley Harding
8. Nashville Skyline (I actually love this album)
9. Blood on the Tracks
10. Bootleg Series Vol. 5, Live 1975
11. Desire
12. Street Legal
13. Time Out Of Mind
14. Modern Times
15. Hop Farm 2012 Bootleg (simply because I was there for my first Dylan show makes it one of my favourites )
