Drawings do not represent reality, what a crook.
Electric chair for this so-called artist beast.

Read Scott Warmuth's essay on Dylan's latest set of paintings. The deceptions regarding the location and the title of the paintings are an inherent part of the collection and the 'borrowing' is a central part of Dylan's artistic process. The essay is an absolute must read when it comes to understanding Dylan's current artistic process.

Painters have been using photos as source materials ever since the invention of photography. Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne – many of their celebrated masterpieces are based on photos (always uncredited). Gerhard Richter, the most expensive living artist always bases his (figurative) work on photos (always uncredited). But when Bob Dylan does it, it suddenly is big news and he is accused of "stealing and deceiving"? Gimme a break!

Just for the record, I read 'Diamond Geezer's blog at about 7 am GMT, and after a bit of thought, posted it to ER (after a few friends); it got into the second batch of listings by Erik yesterday. My motive for posting was as ever interest in Bob's mindset. I was at the first Blackpool gig, and actually believe I may have seen Bob the following day on my way to the station, along the front. I say 'may' because he was heavily covered up - bit like a tramp, actually, and how could one tell. I have always followed the 'leave Bob alone' maxim, and would never approach him, because, God knows, he needs the space! I also saw the Halcyon Art Show in London a few weeks back.

I follow Diamond Geezer daily, and think he has great charm and subtlety; I think I share his world view, but he doesn't throw it in anyone's face. He was just, as I would expect, amused by Bob's borrowing, and wasn't about to dash out looking for a lawyer. Today he moves on, looking at the memorial to a huge TNT explosion in WW1 in East London in which 70+ people lost their lives, and then writing about it. I expect he wanders around incognito a lot, very much in the way I imagine Bob does.

Meanwhile, in the alternative ER Universe, reactions range from 'Bob can do no wrong' through to 'string that hungry kid up by the neck'.

HO HUM ......

The reason might be that Richter never claims that his pictures based in photographs show the reality of what he has seen in the world out there. Such claim was made in the notes that went with the Asia exhibition and with the current series of pictures.

The Silvertown explosion, at a munitions factory in East London, happened 100 years ago today. As well as the 73 killed, another 400 were injured, 900 nearby properties were destroyed, and 70,000 properties damaged. The relatively low death toll from such a massive explosion has been explained by the timing: 6:52 pm on aFriday evening.
