Quote:
Bob Dylan has taken on many non-musical pursuits over the past five decades, from acting and directing to painting and boxing. One of his more unexpected passions is sculpting enormous iron gates, which were first displayed to the public at the Halcyon Gallery in London in 2013. Now, a new 26-by-15-foot custom archway entitled "Portal" will be permanently displayed at Maryland's MGM's National Harbor Casino when it opens to the public later this year.
"Gates appeal to me because of the negative space they allow,” Dylan said in a statement. “They can be closed, but at the same time they allow the seasons and breezes to enter and flow. They can shut you out or shut you in. And in some ways, there is no difference."

Dylan's unique sculptures incorporate found objects including farm equipment, children's toys, wheels, axes, cogs and even antique firearms. "Mr. Dylan is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians of our time, but his incredible metalwork sculptures are a testament to his creative genius and ability to transcend mediums," said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. "As a company founded upon entertainment, we’re truly inspired by artists who channel their energy into diverse paths. We’re proud to collaborate with Mr. Dylan and bring his vision to MGM National Harbor’s Heritage Collection in a way that enhances this sensory resort experience."

Dylan drew the cover art for The Band's 1968 LP Music From Big Pink and his 1970 double album Self Portrait, though for most of his professional career, he kept his artwork private. But he's allowed art galleries around the world to display his work in recent years, including the Drawn Blank series in Chemnitz, Germany at the Kunstsammlungen in 2007, the Brazil Series at the Statens Museum, Copenhagen in 2010 and Revisionist Art at New York's Gagosian Gallery in 2012.
The most recent leg of Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour wrapped up July 7th in Gilford, New Hampshire. It resumes October 7th in Indio California at the Desert Trip festival where he will share the bill with the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters and the Who. He'll then gig all over America before wrapping up November 23rd in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dylan's plans for next year are unclear, though Mavis Staples recently told Rolling Stone he gave her a new song he wants to record with her at some point in the near future.

I'm sure some folks are already complaining and saying they prefer his earlier iron archways.

:(
Anything to put off writing-recording a new album of original songs.

There's no way he did that himself, unassisted.

Nice, though not too different from his Mood Swings. I wonder what they paid him for this... collaboration.

Very cool, Bob. I may have to see this in person if it's possible. I really love Black Buffalo Ironworks.

Wasn't Positively 4th Street written for his arch nemesis? Or was that just iron-ic?

what makes you so sure JP?
he has the time and money to work at his own pace. I admit I don't know much about welding, but I don't see why he couldn't manage it with the right set-up.

He's old, is known to have had back problems for decades, and it's heavy work. Simple as that. Not saying that makes it a lesser work.

I meant to say in my first post that I think you're right that some assistance would definitely be necessary, but I bet there is a way the work could be set-up to allow Bob to weld those smaller pieces without too much stress on him. Maybe someone with some welding experience can chime in here.

Being a Bob fan is pretty cool sometimes. Who knows what the process was in selecting those objects.
Could very well be a whole world of references and meanings hidden in there. Or maybe it's a bunch of junk.
Would love to see a Warmuth-type analysis of these gates.

Most major art installments are done by a crew of workers.

This gate is so awesome!
I want one of his gates sooooo bad.

What is this, raging?
I googled "Black Buffalo Ironworks" and couldn't find much.

It is the logo for his iron works. I first saw it on some of the photos from Mood Swings exhibit. On at least one gate there was an iron buffalo with the words stamped into it.

^ Thanks, raging. 8)

And for those who say that Bob probably didn't weld these gates himself...so what?
The article says that he designed the archway and selected the materials that would
go into it.
...Frank Lloyd Wright didn't actually build the houses known as his, either.

Post subject:  Re: Bob Dylan to Unveil Enormous Iron Archway in Maryland

The article actually doesn't say anything specific about Bob's involvement, be it the design, the construction, whatever.
It just says that the sculpture is "his".

The video on the Rolling Stone does show a photograph of Bob holding a torch and he appears to be working on either this gate or a similar one.
I think he was definitely involved in its construction.

and to be fair to JP QAL, she already said that having someone else do the physical construction (which I don't think is what happened) wouldn't make it a lesser work. I think we are all in agreement there.

I find it shocking the Dylan is allowed to present this as art when Dylan didn't create any of the pieces which are stuck together to make the gate.

You mean he's plagiarizing hammers and screwdrivers? Nasty indeed.

Sorry, approbriating, of course...

interwelderism?

I think the photos are file photos from a few years ago...not of the current work.
Also, with a little crane or two, and the right machinery, he should be able to manipulate all of this by himself. A little moral support from a GoFer would be a big help though...

This is great news. I've been wanting to see his gate work in person for quite a while, and this will make the perfect side trip for when I visit family in the DC area for the holidays.
