Excluding Woody Guthrie, which artist had the biggest influence on Dylan's development as an artist?....Little Richard, Rimbaud, Allen Ginsberg, Hank Williams?

Dylan has since his early days up to now been influenced by a whole lot of people. It is impossible to choose one influence as the most decisive. Hank Williams, Memphis Minnie, Odetta, Charley Patton , and countless others - how can one decide who is the most important one?

Well, he dedicated Writings & Drawings to Guthrie and Robert Johnson, and in Chronicles, he singled out his first exposures to Guthrie, Johnson and Brecht as the three great epiphanies. Meanwhile, the two releases on his own record label are tributes to Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. As to which of the five is the greatest influence, not even Bob would know.

Suze Rotolo, if she counts as an artist (non-musical). Influenced his visual art directly, and his songwriting by sharing books and ideas / ideals.

Among musicians: Muddy Waters, obviously. Since he has covered him four times the last twelve years. In addition to the heavily Muddy influenced Highway 61.

Most influential (early music, initial look)... Guthrie. Dylan : “You could listen to his music and learn how to live".

Not yet mentioned, but highly influential : The Beatles.

The differences in look, stance, swagger and sound between the pre and post-Beatles Newport performances (the Other Side of the Mirror) are revelatory

Dylan : "They were fantastic singers. Lennon, to this day, it’s hard to find a better singer than Lennon was, or than McCartney was and still is."
"I’m in awe of McCartney. He’s about the only one that I am in awe of. He can do it all. And he’s never let up... He’s just so damn effortless."

Lalaine, I agree. There was a recent article that tried to play up Dylan's influence on Lennon and downplay Lennon's influence upon Dylan. I thought the article was rubbish.

Dylan always said he wanted to be like Elvis or popular mainstream like paul. He's having a go.

But Paul 'oh boy' can't write like our boy and Paul's recent stuff are widely accepted by Beatles fans as mediocre. (see Beatles discussion groups for more info)

Arthur Rimbaud.

And Anton Chekhov, apparently.

Bob's lyrics are heavily influenced by many authors, such as Junichi Saga and Henry Timrod.

But in spite of Bob's claim to have read a book of Chekhov short stories, no one has ever found a trace of Chekhov in his lyrics.

Chekhov's characters are always trapped, but Bob's characters typically take off for the great north woods to work as a cook for a spell, or else they drive their cars all the way until the wheels fall off.

Hard to say coz Bob has such varied taste in music.

But at first it was Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Listen to Bob's first album & bootlegs from that period. He's doing his best Ramblin' Jack imitation.

Given the fact the Dylan and the Dead stands atop the heap of history's great live albums, I think you may be right.
