hi, mates.

is there any way to save discussions as text files?
all pages and, possibly, in one click.

Not copying/pasting the content of any single page into a blank web page.

thanks for any help
:)

Giuseppe Gazerro, I think this would be a grand opportunity for you to shine and make a glorious contribution to the Expecting Rain community by devloping the software to accomplish this. Even at a nominal price, you could find yourself very well compensated as I have no doubt many of us woud be inclined to purchase and use it... :D

Until it was available for illegal downloading anyway...

which, in case it were, would make me climb from the status of *glorious contributor* to the one of *millionaire dylanologist*

:D

We'd all be happy about that! :D

One option would be right clicking on the topic title and selecting Save Target As... , Save As... or whatever (depends on the browser) and storing the saved HTML-s in a folder, where you can access the desired topics directly if you are connected to the Internet.

Three options as far as I can see.

a) Forum admin codes a simple export function.

b) You create a macro to go through discussion pages and either capture the HTML or do a screen grab.

c) You use data mining software, which most likely breaks the site ToS (although I'm sure the admins/mods can clarify this point).

Sorry, forum admin is a less-than-novice, so option a) is out.

What if he used something like http://www.httrack.com/?

It basically copies contents from the website. It's a bit tricky to get it right, but if set up properly, one could simply copy an entire thread, HTML and all. However, some sites ban this sort of 'data mining' either because of IP on the data actually contained on the website (which I don't think is an issue here, seeing as it is a public forum) or because of the bandwidth demands of an operation that accesses and downloads several pages at once.

Of course, there is no way of preventing someone from using software like the above. The way sites monitor data mining is to watch out for unusual peaks in their bandwidth and then just IP ban the perpetrators.

If Guiseppe can manage to set it up properly, it would only download the text from a specific thread, at very little bandwidth cost.
