I doubt that this is breaking news, but last Thursday, in Boston, I counted 10 microphones. There was one at the piano, and one in back (in front of the drums) that Bob was using. There were microphones at all of the stage monitors that I could see from my seat and three older style at the front of the stage with an additional long armed microphone pointed to the audience. I couldn't see the monitor for Charlie. I could see the mixing board, but not a lot of activity once the sound was dialed in.

Probably standard procedure so everyone could hear what they were playing but it sure looks like they are recording these shows.

There would have been more than 10! Probably at least 6 for George's drums, 3 for the grand piano, 1 or 2 for each guitar amp... ect

It's unclear whether all the centre stage mics are plugged in, or if they're a prop for Bob to hide behind.

The audience mics are pretty standard these days, whether they're recording or not, though given it's so easy to record these days they probably do.

Those mics are there for the sound guys to project the band into the audience. Just the standard thing really.

I don't know anything about these things, so I hope somebody can tell me more about the audience mics: what exactly is their purpose? They might be standard, but that's absolutely unclear to me.

They're there to record the audience applause, hall reverb ect so it can be mixed into a recording or monitor mixes. Without them, it would sound like he band were playing in a vacuum, which can sound a little unnatural. They're pretty much standard these days for big acts.
