Why See Bob Dylan in Bloomington?
Indiana University

WHAT IS LEFT TO SAY ABOUT BOB DYLAN?

One of the most celebrated and influential artists of the last 60 years, Dylan started out as part of the burgeoning folk revival in the early 60's, winning popularity and acclaim with his 'finger pointing' songs that drew on social and political sources and became synonymous with the Civil Rights struggle.

But creatively, Dylan never wanted to be constrained to one genre or ideal, and his 1966 'switch' to electric was received as an outrageous betrayal by those who had pigeon-holed him as a protest singer. Luckily, he has never listened to his detractors and in this period released some of rock's most prestigious albums, including Highway 61 Revisited, with the lead track 'Like A Rolling Stone', which was voted number one on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2010. There is more to this cultural chameleon than his hits, but to describe every nuance and tale would be a disservice, as there is nothing like seeing him live!

Since 1987, Dylan and band have taken on the world numerous times with the Never Ending World tour, bringing his immense back catalogue to audiences, whilst still recording and releasing new records. His legacy precedes him, there is not a folk or rock artist working today that is not in some way inspired by this legend.

This will not only be my first Dylan show, but my first concert in general! Front row! Wish me luck!

Have a great time Train!
Glad you get to catch your first show in a smaller venue and right up front.
Of course, your “Dylan Bar” and “Concert Bar” will be set quite high for future shows!

Looking forward to hearing about your experience.
Nice way to enter. Enjoy!

Last time he played here:

Auditorium
University Of Indiana
Bloomington, Indiana
2 November 2009

1. Watching The River Flow
2. The Man In Me
3. Beyond Here Lies Nothin' (Bob Dylan-Robert Hunter/Bob Dylan)
4. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
5. It's All Good (Bob Dylan-Robert Hunter/Bob Dylan)
6. If You Ever Go To Houston (Bob Dylan-Robert Hunter/Bob Dylan)
7. The Levee's Gonna Break
8. San Diego Serenade (Tom Waits)
9. This Dream Of You (Bob Dylan-Robert Hunter/Bob Dylan)
10. Cold Irons Bound
11. Tryin' To Get To Heaven
12. Highway 61 Revisited
13. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
14. Thunder On The Mountain
15. Ballad Of A Thin Man

16. Like A Rolling Stone
17. Jolene (Bob Dylan-Robert Hunter/Bob Dylan)
18. All Along The Watchtower

5 tracks from Together Through Life. I think track 8 is some kind of joke - I don't think Tom Waits played a guest spot there at all, it appears that Stu Kimball just sang a single verse.

Yes, Stu got another rare appearance in the Spotlight.
This article had a you tube audio attached back when, which has since disappeared:

Tom Waits makes another guest appearance on Bob Dylan’s tour

I suppose that you can make of all this whatever you want. Last night, Bob Dylan again introduced a special guest, “Tom Waits,” (he first did this on Hallowe’en night) and again guitarist Stu Kimball went to the microphone and performed a snatch of one of Tom’s songs — this time San Diego Serenade (a real early one, that, and a lovely tune).

The audio is currently (since gone) on YouTube. In his performance, Stu is again a pretty good ringer for Waits.

Pleasantly bizarre and hiliarious, I would say — and don’t you want some of that with the price of those seats? The Bob Dylan Show is turning into a variety show.

I note that many of the reviews of Christmas In The Heart have compared Dylan’s singing to that of Tom Waits — with some justification. I don’t know if that has anything to do with why this strange charade is taking place on stage. But, hey, let’s just relax and enjoy it.

Mavis is about the exact opposite of Bob. Sing alongs, crowd interaction, stories, warmth, band intros.....

She is fantastic.

Stage hands changing over for Bob.

Actually, I remain quite parched and fear to miss the opening with the rush out in the concessions...

George is a great drummer. But something happened to his hi hat in the middle of DR and he stopped playing completely for a long time while he dismantled and attempted to repair his cymbal. It was an odd choice, the sound is completely different with no drums at all!

Tangled is completely unrecognizable. I have never heard this type of arrangement before.

Thunder was the real sleeper hit here. The band really opened up. George had a great drum solo here. Standing ovation after this one.

Bob seemed in rough voice for the first 3 songs. When he hit that first crooner though he seemed to loosen up.
