On a post about Dirt Road Blues never having been
included in a setlist it was discussed as being a
good choice (by me) as a new song to open the shows
with. Things Have Changed is one of my fav Dylan songs
so this is in no way a judgement against it, but i
wondered what you think might make a good opening
song for his current band and sound. Especially songs
that aren't played often if at all.
Set openers usually warm up the voice and get the crowd
into the show, so it doesn't have to be a heavy wordy
track, something light, fun but upbeat enough to kick
start a concert. My choices would be in no order;

Dirt Road Blues
Rita May
One More Weekend
Odds And Ends
Narrow Way
On A Night Like This
Living The Blues
Its All Good

Honestly the only good song on your list for opening shows was Dirt Road Blues. It's all good would be a better closer than opener

I think I'd prefer Things Have Changed over any of those for opener. I'd love to see a live Narrow Way but I think it'd be better later in the setlist, not the opening spot.

I think Scarlet Town should be promoted to set opener with Things Have Changed coming in at no. 2. Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat and Maggies Farm should return lower in the order and Narrow Way should be just before the encore.

Well, he used to have some real oddball choice for the #1 song over the years, but I think if he ever chooses a new opening number (like really new, not going back to "Rainy Day Women" or something), it would have to be a song from the Mod-Bob era, seeing that there are zero old, obscure songs left in the set at this point.

Trouble is, I think he'll probably stick with "Things Have Changed" unless he revamps the set entirely (which I don't see coming any time soon), because not only would the replacement song have to work well as an opening number musically, it would also be on par with "Things Have Changed" as a fairly well known, much loved song. While Librachild made some fine suggestions, I don't see any song on the list that would fit this bill and I think the current set is down to its bare minimum of "Hits" to drop one more and replace it with a lesser known number.

Out of the songs already in the set, "Duquesne Whistle" could work as a show opener as well, much like it did on "Tempest", or "Highway 61 Revisted", but that would just be going back to something he's done before.

I myself liked Cats In The Well when it was the standard for a long spell a few years back....

Set opener should be a high energy throw away song. They sound man is usually tuning things in at the start of a show, so you don't want it to be an important song.

Things Have Changed has been opening for close to 4 years now - the funny thing is how the newest arrangement has produced some of the best versions of the song during that span. It really works well, so he'll probably drop it.

I'm not sure if Bob would want to acknowledge a gospel bootleg series release through his concerts, but if so, maybe he could do one of his songs from that period as an opener. I thought Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking was an opener for some shows a while back. I suppose using that song would be going back to something he has already done, so perhaps another song from that period that would be a suitable opener could be used. How about The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar or Caribbean Wind.

It will be the same set unless a new album would occur.

Afraid you're correct Shooter.
Maybe with a few tweaks. Not expecting much.

I think Narrow Way would be a good opener. I'm not holding my breath.

Really? You don't think a lively 'Narrow Way' or a raucous 'On A Night Like This'
wouldn't loosen Dylan's voice and gee the crowd up?
I guarantee you if 'Odds And Ends' opened up a show it'd get a thunderous
round of applause. Or a beefed & sped up 'One More Weekend'?
Don't forget we're not talking about them sounding like the recorded versions
are we :D

Would like something he's never opened with before...and not an American standard.

I agree that the openers have to be oddball (tradition) but there's SO many obscure songs
that Dylan still hasn't played live at all yet that you could choose from. Here's a few more;

Step It Up And Go
Silent Weekend
Mixed-Up Confusion
On The Road Again
Peggy Day
John Wesley Harding
Black Crow Blues
Shake Shake Mama
I Wanna Be Your Lover
You Wanna Ramble
Working On A Guru
Tell Ol’ Bill (TTS version)
Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?

I also think that Narrow Way or Dirt Road Blues would be great openers. But I'm afraid that nobody will ever witness a live-premiere of one of those songs :( :(

Remember when Bob played Million Dollar Bash? It wasn't an opener but I never expected it to be dusted off.

Anyway, I'm leaving tomorrow for the show. Long flight :?

Hurricane would be the best opener anytime anywhere anyway.

Somebody Touched Me was a great opener on some bootleg I heard from 99. I doubt he would ever play that again though.
