I enjoyed the recent concert in Nottingham, on the 5th day of May. I was listening attentively to To Ramona, which i love, trying to work out how, if at all, the words had changed. It was tricky so I'm wondering whether anyone else has noticed. (I have a small issue with 'cannot explain that in linees')
I was also trying to imagine what might be coming next on the playlist. What I thought might have been perfect was Absolutely Sweet Marie, but of course I was wrong. And then I thought how hysterically funny it would have been if Dylan had said "Any requests?"

Can you imagine.....

I can imagine.....I was at a show in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.....November16th, 2004.

He played Absolutely Sweet Marie, along with This Wheels On Fire, and Seeing The Real You At Last...(last live performance, I think ?), Under The Red Sky, and Masters Of War...

...and Bob dedicated a song to "someone named Aladdin", told a TERRIBLE joke, and asked something along lines of...." does anyone want to hear anything ?".....and as everyone started yelling out songs, he says in a drawn out whine......" Well its too late now".

Larry's last tour.......GREAT show by the way.

....but....can I imagine it now..............????

While I can't imagine if happening now - thanks for asking, though! :-) - Bob has repnded to audience rquests before. Two I can remember arte "Jokerman" in Miami in 1998 and "Trying to Get To Heaven" in Vienna in 1999.

Any more instances from the somewhat recent past where an audience request dierctly led to the song being played?

Stirling Castle 2001, as he passed the crowd waiting to get in someone asked him to sing Visions of Johanna and he played it even though he had already played it at the previous show, there are other instances from 1989 and 1990 but none of them spring to mind right now.

I suppose there's no chance that if there was a mass audience protest when the first American Songbook song was played that he would revert to an all original songs set? No, didn't think so!

Of course, its a silly idea, I just thought it would be a question of how quickly an audience would realise how impossible it would be. Nice to think he could stiil have that kind of rapport with an audience though.

I'm off to listen again to the drug fuelled oblivion of Sweet Marie....

Thanks all

Well, coming after the first phase of the static era, people were quite happy about *any* changes initially. And he added them one by one, and by the time people realized what he was doing and that those songs were here to stay (at least for the time being) it was already to late.

I remember reading here a while back that someone met him while hanging around his tour bus at his hotel (I think maybe this was 2003 or 2004), and Bob asked the person if they'd like to hear anything special. If I remember correctly, the person requested One Too Many Mornings, but Bob said that the band hadn't rehearsed that one, so the person requested Boots of Spanish Leather, and Bob said that they could try it. Later that night at the show Bob played Boots and told the crowd it was a request from so-and-so (he actually remembered the guy's name). Pretty cool story.

Review by Adam Dean
Always expect the unexpected! After a leisurely 3 hour drive from URI to
Portsmouth, NH, I pulled into the parking lot of the Marriott Courtyard to
find two sleek black tour buses parked around the back of the hotel. This
simple twist of fate led to my chance encounter with the man himself, Bob
Dylan. During the course of the afternoon, I had a lengthy conversation
with Larry Campbell (whom I had previously met backstage at Sioux Falls SD
on 4/1/00) and also briefly chatted up Tony, who was his normal grumpy
self. No one said much about Bob, who generally keeps to himself even when
on tour. About 4:45, dressed in a hooded gray sweatshirt, white pants, and
a black leather jacket, Bob came waltzing out the back door of the hotel
alone, on his way to the bus. I stopped him, we started to chat, and had
about a 10 minute conversation on various topics: the election (he
expressed his disappointment about 4 more years), Bob's golf game ("I'm
hitting it OK"), the new albums "new" arrangements (or re-arrangements if
you will), the previous night's show and set list (Bob seemed particularly
interested in how the show sounded, he asked me twice) (He thought the
sound inside Ryan Center was pretty good for a hockey rink), and how often
he logs on to Bob Dates ("from time to time, when I have a chance"). The
conversation ended with Bob asking me what I wanted to hear tonight, a
chance to make a request (*!*) to Bob Dylan. I mentioned how it would be
nice to hear some of the older tunes tonight, some of his great old songs.
So I asked for Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands ("sorry, we haven't rehearsed
that one", and quickly suggested Jokerman "don't think we'll fit that one
in", and came around to "Boots Of Spanish Leather" which is a long time
personal favorite and I couldn't remember ever actually hearing it live,
so......

Bob played an awesome show tonight. He was so, so into each and every
song, carefully phrasing each song clearly, and playing tremendous
harmonica. He really did pull out some great old songs (Tom Thumb's Blues,
Just Like A Woman, Forever Young, Ballad Of A Thin Man) and when he played
Boots Of Spanish Leather, and dedicated it to me: "my new friend Mr.
Dean", well you can imagine I was about ten feet off the ground, walking
on air! After 30 years of Bob Dylan shows, I had a chance to meet the
great man himself, and contrary to all the rumours I had heard, he was
very nice, very pleasant, easy to talk to, he looks you in the eye when he
speaks to you, and he really wants to perform well for his fans. God bless
you, Mr. Dylan and may you keep on playing for many many years on the
Never Ending Tour.

Wonderful story, thanks for the repost. Haha Sad Eyed Lady is a much more far-out request than One Too Many Mornings.

Last night's highlight.
A real get up and dance tune.
So refreshing amongst the quaalude-paced Sinatras.
