On the Desert Trip show I was wondering if something would be happening to the set as The Stones are on the same night. They might have the idea that it would be nice to honour Dylan by playing their 'hit' from Stripped 'Like A Rolling Stone' with Keith saying 'thank you, Bob'. But Dylan may have none of it and think 'I haven't played it for some time, it's my song so I'm gonna do it' and get in first! Or indeed he may turn up the volume and play Brown Sugar in respect of them, wouldn't that be something! He did used to include it in his set around 10 years ago.

he might rather think "oh my god, they perform that song in such an awful way (i.e. as a sing along pop song (like they always do)) – I need to show them how it is done" (but next week he will have forgotten about that…)

In 1998 he clearly didn't care either way. In a year that saw virtually none "LARS" performances by Bob, he was still happy to sing it with the Stones.

I think that he'll do the song with the Stones is a distinct possibility, changing his own set beyond Mainz/Tübingen 2015 proportions - not so much.

Hoping for two completely new Desert Set Lists

Honestly, I think that ship has sailed. I'd think the best we can hope for for DT (and those two shows ONLY) is something like Mainz and Tübingen 2015, in other words: A condensed SET with some oldies thrown in for the tourists in the audience.

Let's face it, as great as the NET has been, the changes were mostly gradual. How many times in NET history can you say: Wow, this was really different, beyond the obvious changes that occurred when a new record was released?

He has switched up the format of the show significantly only three times in the last 28 years: 1988, 1999 and 2002. Yes, certain "anchor" songs have come and gone, that gave certain years a different feel ("Silvio", anyone? Hello "Country Pie"!), but while his pool of songs usually was huge, it didn't change dramatically over a long period of time, especially in the 90s and again in the 2010s.

The only times that he made bigger changes to his repertoire in those years, were when albums with original songs were released, with "TOOM" (Fall leg 1997), "L&F" (Fall leg 2001), "Modern Times" (Fall 2006), "TTL" (belated and only for one leg, Fall 2009), and "Tempest" (again, belated, but then with full force, in Spring of 2013). The only exception I can think of is the covers-heavy leg of Fall 2002 (please correct me...).

Genuine question: Is the a statistic about how many "old" songs he has newly introduced to his repertoire (that were more than one-offs) by year? Of the top of my head I'd say it couldn't have been more than 2-3 in any given year, and virtually none in the last ten, but my memory is fading.

Good points. Not expecting dramatic change, but sure enjoyed seeing several shows in a row with song-choice changes in each.

2014, 15 & 16 aren't even listed due to such stagnancy in songs performed
(not saying he didn't perform them well, just not a lot of variety)

Thanks, Barefoot. I did know about those numbers. Meanwhile, I've found the statistic I was interested in:

http://bobdylan.com/songs/?first=filters&order=asc

back catalog song debuts on the NET (not counting newly released material):

1988 - 5 (1 of which made it into regular rotation)
1989 - 6 (2)
1990 - 5 (0)
1991 - 3 (1, for one year only)
1992 - 5 (2)
1993 - 2 (1)
1994 - 1 (0)
1995 - 3 (1 + 1 for one year only)
1996 - 1 (1)
1997 - 1 (1)
1998 - 0
1999 - 4 (2)
2000 - 4 (3)
2001 - 0
2002 - 1 (0)
2003 - 0
2004 - 2 (0)
2005 - 1 (0)
2006 - 0
2007 - 2 (0, both sung by Jack White)
2008 - 1 (0)
2009 - 1 (0)
2010 - 0
2011 - 0
2012 - 0
2013 - 1 (0, a cover)
2014 - 1 (0)
2015 - 0

Just proves my theory: It's been 16 years since Bob has introduced back catalog songs to his repertoire that were played more than a handful of times. Those three songs were "Country Pie" (last played 2007), "Tell Me That It Isn't True" and "If Dogs Run Free" (both last played 2007).

He only newly introduced 7 old self-penned or officially released songs to his repertoire in the last 20 years that made it into rotation (a number much smaller than I would have guessed).

Those songs were:

"This Wheel's On Fire"
"Blind Willie McTell"
"Down Along The Cove"
"Duncan And Brady"
"Country Pie"
"Tell Me That It Isn't True"
and
"If Dogs Run Free"

Even one-offs are super rare in the last ten years. We got 1 "Handy Dandy" in 2008, one "Billy" in 2009, and a staggering 7 "Huck's Tune" in 2014. That's all folks.

So to say that these days "anything is possible" and "Bob always keeps up guessing" is a bit of an exaggeration, I guess.

He's been drawing from a rapidly smaller getting pool of songs for years now.

Wow was Huck's Tune played 7 times? I always thought that was a three or four count song

I love Excel, and I love charts - so I put together this trend using Olof's data of different songs played in each year of the NET.

he didn't need to since he had plenty of new songs penned during the last 20 years – and most of them were in heavy rotation throughout the years.
On the other hand he re-introduced lots of songs he hadn't performed for quite a long time, for example:
- Dignity (2000)
- Frankie Lee & Judas Priest (2000)
- Solid Rock (2002)
- Saving Grace (2003/04?)
- Gotta Serve Somebody (1998ff.)
- Song to Woody (2000)
- It's Alright, Ma (right! It hasn't been performed between 1992 and 1999)
etc etc

Love me a good data hack! Will now live for the pipe-dream represented by the minor uptick between 2013-2015.

All that said, I'm in the would-pay-to-hear-Dylan-read-the-phonebook camp (don't get any ideas, Bob).

And there are probably those who would say an inspired phonebook recital would be more interesting than the Set.

Bob is following a surprisingly consistent trend in number of songs performed per year. I was surprised to see the trend began in 2002.

Bob must get bored in between tours. Maybe he is sitting on his couch enjoying the Olympics. Ok. Probably not.

I guess that at least 30% of the songs performed in 1990 were only performed at Toad's Place

I'm a sucker for data visuals too, Kudd. Thanks.
It would be an interesting comparison to overlay another color of points/lines representing the 'number of shows per year' on this same chart.
This same scale will work for both.

Wonder if he'll fill the time between Desert #1 & Vegas?

Maybe a good one to aim for . Ticket prices seem reasonable - from $49 - and in between the 2 indio shows may be the best chance of a significant deviation from the set .
Not possible for me - Las Vegas too far!

Surprised adding another show in between Deserts hasn't happened yet. Hmmm.

So it appears they will warm up in private for Desert #1 and then Vegas will be the warmup for Desert #2?

Interesting, wonder what the problem was. "Scheduling conflicts" are probably on the venues end right, as Bob wouldn't have scheduled a date he couldn't logistically play?
