Bob Dylan delivers strong Desert Trip set, despite quirky performance preferences

Indio, California, USA – Bob Dylan opened the Desert Trip festival with a set filled with classic Dylan songs sung as clearly and powerfully as he ever does these days, a strong performance that saw the legendary singer-songwriter give the crowd what they wanted while doing exactly as he pleased.

Dylan's last few tours have focused almost entirely on his recent run of records, the last two of which were cover albums of classic pop and jazz tunes. Those and his other albums over the past 15 years or so are full of fine music, but for a weekend built around six legendary performers from the '60s you certainly hoped Dylan would flip through more of his back pages than he has of late.

And he did, opening his 16-song 90-minute set with "Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35" and then "Don't Think Twice It's All Right." Singing from the piano he played most of the night Dylan sounded fully committed to the performance, his ace band as sharp as it always is.

The massive video screens hung over the screen didn't show the band or Dylan at first (and he didn't allow press photographers to shoot his set) but as he advanced into songs such as "Highway 61 Revisited" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" the video clips also included shots of the performance so that fans in the expansive field could at least tweet home that they'd actually seen the Man himself.

Eventually Dylan and the band started to mix in a few more recent numbers -- "Early Roman Kings" and "Love Sick" among the best -- but even as the video screens went to strictly stock footage (Bob seems to really like black and white noir-ish images from the '50s) the classic songs continued: "Tangled Up In Blue," "Desolation Row," "Ballad Of A Thin Man."

In the end Dylan's quirky performance preferences mattered not. He wasn't shown on the video screen after the sixth song of the night. He spoke exactly zero words to the audience. But he played his good stuff and did so terrifically so that by the time of his final song, "Masters Of War" of the early '60s classic album "Freewheeling' Bob Dylan," he done what the crowd wanted and what he wanted too.

People at Desert Trip can’t see Bob Dylan on the big screen and they’re mad about it

Indio, California, USA – Bob Dylan played Desert Trip Friday night and by almost all accounts, he was amazing.

But there was a slight problem for festival goers. The gigantic screen above the stage wasn’t showing Dylan.

Well, not really. It was showing archive footage of Dylan, seemingly random imagery and not much else. And people were mad.

This is where we’d usually step in and offer our photos of Dylan to fill the need his set left but we weren’t allowed to shoot photos or video of him either.

Here’s to hoping weekend two’s Dylan visuals are more to the crowd’s liking.

Bob Dylan will be making a second disappearance at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Mostly in black-and-white.

It's definitely gonna be a Million Dollar Bash. 8)
One of my favorite songs of Bob's, too.

This time there should be unforgiving close-ups of Dylan's face on the video screens for his entire set whether he likes it or not.
Sitting that far away from the stage is a kind of depressing punishment for being poor.

And they should put his LYRICS on the screens as well.
We Dylan fans have all rolled our eyes whenever we hear somebody complain they "can't understand the words."
Since it diminishes their enjoyment of the performance, why not scroll subtitles across the bottom of the screens?

Implementing my two suggestions would show that the concert is more about Dylan strutting and posing like a peacock, and (mixed metaphor alert) rolling around in applause and money like a pig in mud.

The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue

Lace! Sounds like you might wanna shove all the electronics in the trunk till Desert2 is over.
We will survive.

Someone else may step forward, otherwise we've got tweets & stereoscopes & whatever else feeding us.
Have a great time & we look forward to your thoughts & impressions when the dust settles.

Anyone else going to #2? Hcooper may be changing his flight plans based on historical evidence.

I think so. Also I think no hat. Actually maybe not.. With that week off and the strangeness of yesterday, I think maybe a few different songs.

It starts a couple of hours earlier tonight doesn't it?

Stayed up late last week to follow the set list mystery. Much more
Predictable this week so will sleep!
Big hope for the folks there is that he will keep the screens on for the whole show
Experience of being in the presence of a Nobel laureate ,with or without a hat , is diminished if you can't see hin

So... 1. will Bob be the one with the least setlist variation of all the Desert Trip performers? And 2. will it have any effect on future discussions here that every Dylan show is entirely unique and all his peers are just dinosaurs replicating the same show over and over again?

Just scored free comp tix to Les Brers (The Allman-less Brothers Band) at the Fillmore tonight.
Good. If I can't be on the West Coast then might as well, might as well.
Have a fun Live Set List time tonight folks!

"Les Brers features founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, along with longtime members of ABB, bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones. Additionally the band includes former ABB guitarist Jack Pearson; guitarist Pat Bergeson; frequent ABB guest keyboardist Bruce Katz who also performed with The Gregg Allman Band; and vocalist Lamar Williams, Jr. the son of the famed ABB bass player.

The band’s name is a nod to the instrumental “Les Brers in A Minor.” Les Brers will perform an eclectic selection of music familiar to fans of The Allman Brothers Band, whose unique improvisational style, great songwriting and extensive touring made them one of the most acclaimed bands in music history."

1. Yes
2. Perhaps an impetus . But it can easily be argued that Bobs approach to staticity is singularly unique and perplexing

Awesome, BF! For some reason the title of the event only makes me think of a good French country ale. Hope you find one there.
