Should be well known to one and all hERe:

Richard Thompson, travelling as Richard Thompson Trio this summer and promoting his album Electric

Imitation is the highest form of praise. Dylan's highest form of praise usually comes in the form of referential stage attire. To which case I present exhibit A.

This guy's got my bets for most likely to share stage time with Dylan on the tour. I won't even embarrass myself by trying to define his music, talent, accomplishments, or abilities. A Shout out across the pond for input there, and his career has already been fervently discussed in these pages. Singularly most excited for him besides Dylan's set this summer.

I think an argument can be made that RT's sound influenced much of Dylan's stage sound through the nineties, but I will allow that to remain to be seen.

Electric is on my shopping list before July - what else should I put in there? I am particularly interested in free exposure that I don't have to put in my shopping cart.

I'm also interested to know if BD & RT have officially done anything together in the past.

also interested to know what you think of his Voice?

One of his distinctions from Bob is his availability to the media!

But I think Bob beats him on website quality

Time is shrinking to get familiar with Dylan's supporting acts this summer. Here, we'll install a little informational primer for those who are interested in knowing a little more about the bands involved. I'm guessing people want to know a little less about whether they suck or kicka$$, and perhaps would value some information about their history and career arc, and how they might intersect with Bob. So I'd like to invite people who have knowledge about these bands to contribute.

Start Here, on Smoke's "Live Show" thread, where show samples and notable concerts/recordings/performances of the bands will hopefully accumulate.

I need to learn more of his music. I have some Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking and the one after it (forget the title)...I'm not well-schooled here.

In honor of this thread though I will listen to my personal favorite Richard Thompson moment - his guitar playing on Nick Drake's song "Hazey Jane II." Sublime.

My friend Jesus mentioned recently that he's seen Dylan and Thompson together in Spain in 1991, now you can too:

That is a sweet video! Although, I have to say Manzanera outshines Mr. Thompson, at least on Watchtower. I'll have to watch the rest. Bob sounds like '91 Bob (aka dreadful), but what a band! Jack Bruce looks positively jolly, and crazy Ray Cooper back there on percussion. Didn't that guy play at pretty much every concert during the '80's? It seems like every time I watched a live video from that era, he was back there, jumping around. I think my favorite was the Secret Policeman's Ball. Man, what an under-appreciated era of music!

^ I have to say I agree with you, I handn't been aware of him before, but I was captivated. Then I find he's behind a lot of music I've enjoyed.

...Nice to see Brit up there in the billing. Sorry, just a bit of unabashed patriotism there....Would be niceto see them do Million Dollar Bash together or Dear Landlord - I only know Thompson's Fairport stuff.

Richard Thompson Trio pretty much blew Emmylou & Rodney Crowell off the Orpheum stage a few weeks ago.
No contest. He never ceases to amaze in a live setting.
