As you may have read through today's front page article, apparently Chronicles 2 & 3 are being shopped around, a book of poetry and... a TTRH quote book?

Can we get Fred on the case on this one? Is this the book Amazon had listed all those years ago? Could this signal a return to TTRH in the future by releasing this? Is this the book that stiffled another anonymous unofficial book project's release? etc.

Hmmmm.

Less likely to see the light of day: a sequel to Dylan’s acclaimed 2004 book Chronicles Vol. 1. “I hope there’s another one,” the source says. “That’s all I can say. If it was planned I’d tell you.”
~ an "anonymous source," quoted by Rolling Stone.

I think the key word is proposed for all the books. But it possibly explains what happened to Chronicles 2 (as well as a certain book on TTRH that will remain nameless). :? Personally, I'm more excited by the idea of a sequel to Chronicles than I am by a "a collection of riffs from his Theme Time Radio Hour show...." I heard tell of various ideas knocked around for the proposed 2008 TTRH book, including "themed" chapters and the "riffs," so yeah I think it's that book revived.

As much as I'd love to see a new series of TTRH, I think the possibility highly unlikely. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong. It'd give me an excuse to revive Dreamtime.

Bob Dylan is strumming up discord in the publishing world

Rock legend Bob Dylan is strumming up discord in the publishing world. Literary agent and industry troublemaker Andrew Wylie has been shopping a proposed series of books by the singer-songwriter, including a follow-up to his best-selling Chronicles: Volume One, according to two executives with knowledge of the situation. Mr. Wylie's move has not gone over well with Simon & Schuster, which published the 2004 memoir. An executive there insists the house has a deal for volumes Two and Three.

Industry insiders speculate that Mr. Wylie would like to sign his client with former Simon & Schuster publisher David Rosenthal, a noted Dylan fan who worked on Volume One. Mr. Rosenthal launches his new imprint at Penguin in January.

In addition to the memoirs, the deal would include a book that tells the stories behind some of Mr. Dylan's famous lyrics, a book of poetry, and a collection of riffs from his Theme Time Radio Hour show on Sirius Satellite Radio. Neither Mr. Wylie nor a Simon & Schuster spokesman responded to requests for comment.

Btw, the Never-Ending Theme Time Radio Hour book (NETTRH) new publication date is now December 1, 2030, according to Amazon.

via today's front page and Crain's New York Business. It looks like the TTRH "riffs" book is live.

Quote:
Rock legend Bob Dylan has a new book deal—with his old publisher, Simon & Schuster.

The house, which brought out the singer-songwriter's 2004 best-seller Chronicles: Volume One, has reached a deal with literary agentAndrew Wylie for six books, according to several industry insiders. The books include two follow-ups to Chronicles and a collection of riffs from Mr. Dylan's radio show on Sirius XM.

The deal came after Mr. Wylie had spent months trying to drum up interest in the project among other publishers (see Crain's, Nov. 22), despite Simon & Schuster's insistence that it had the rights to anyChronicles sequels. “Wylie's contention was that S&S didn't own the "memoir,' because Chronicleswas "nonfiction stories' from his life and not a memoir,” said the editor. But no house would bite because of the potential for a lawsuit.

Mr. Wylie had been looking for an eight-figure offer, according to another editor, who didn't know the deal's final value.

The agent did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment. A Simon & Schuster spokesman declined to comment.

Well if ever there was even the slightest outside chance that TTRH would get a second life, this book is the winking star in the sky. While still not likely, I know, this at the very least means they are keeping the TTRH brand alive and out there, plus gauging the extent of the interest long after the show has gone into re-runs and seeing how profitable it is. Excellent sales of the book will only lead to more demand for more TTRH related releases and, of course, more TTRH period.

And... considering the deal is for 6 books, I would guess the following five are for sure:

- Chronicles V2
- TTRH riff book
- book of poetry
- Chronicles V3
- updated Lyrics book

And the sixth book could be anyone of the following:

- Chronicles V4 (not likely, as it was stated to be only three to my recollection?)
- No Direction Home V2 companion (possible, as rumors had it they had started interviews to cover 1967 - 1977, although no real NDH book existed in the first place but more along the lines of continuing the Bob Dylan Scrapbook maybe?)
- second book of poetry (if the first is a success)
- narrative fiction book (Bob using the cut and paste appropriation methods in Chronicles might compel him to try and tie it to a complete fiction instead of just a partial fiction based on his own life)
- TTRH book V2 (covering additional TTRH from a new seasons 4 and/or 5 and/or 6 several years down the road?)

I know it's an old project, and I know it's only a book... but... at this stage, you have to see hope where you can find it. And while it is tiny, it is something.

Allow Fred to chime in here to douse the hope for us all with some insight into the situation that provides some buzz killing logic to this grain of hope.... over to you Fred, the axe is sharpened.

Well, geesh, I hope I don't come across that negative all the time, Tim.

Fwiw, I don't have any further insight past what I've posted from Crain's. If you follow the General discussion forum...

... you'll see that I indulge in some idle speculation that Chronicles 2 is finished and might be released in time for the 2011 Christmas season, as well as a theory about what was going on with the Dylan book package that Wylie was flogging and which looks like it's now back home again with S&S.

But that's all it is, idle speculation. It's just as likely that the TTRH "riffs" book and/or poetry book will be slated for Christmas release with Chronicles 2 hopefully coming early in 2012 at the latest. Certainly the riffs book would be the easiest one to produce from scratch, have in release for the Christmas market by October and would make a good Christmas gift for the Dylan fan. As I remember, the Scrapbook sold a very respectable 125,000 copies. I suspect if packaged nicely the riffs book could do as well.

Me, if I was doing it, I'd think about including a CD of Mr. D. doing the riffs as well as his def poetry readings. Maybe if he timing is right and they can get the releases offering one of the shows instead. I could see including the "Summer" of "Flowers" show if they did a summer release, maybe the Christmas Special if they target for the Christmas season.

As to TTRH coming back, no one would be happier than me if that happened.

It's still coming in 2030. Let's hope they'll change that date soon.
But seriously, it's pretty exciting knowing we will eventually see all those books.

I would imagine the book is going to come with an episode or two.

Here's hoping we get "Carnival" and "Furniture."

Hopefully, AWA's prediction of my being a wet blanket ain't true this time. But...

Updated Jan. 21 at 11:07 a.m.: In response to an inquiry from Pop & Hiss, a source close to Dylan says there is "nothing to announce. [There is] a grain of truth in the Internet rumors, in that a variety of book projects are always being discussed, but no deal like that has been made."
