I heard this on NPR this weekend, and I thought some of you might enjoy this essay and analysis of the music and lyrics of the song: Brother can you spare a dime.

NPR:
A Depression-Era Anthem For Our Times

Accompanying blog post:
Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? by Susan Stamberg, Special Correspondent

note: I tried to make clickable links, it's been awhile since I did it.

There's also a good NY Times article from last year on the song's origins...

I keep on trying to do a podcast on Depression-era songs but, no pun intended, I get so damn depressed I can't finish it. Hard Times for these Modern Times.

While it's not the first time, nor will be the last, (it's the lot of the free-lance writer), I joined the ranks of the unemployed at the end of October, losing a long-term contract that had been my bread-n'-butter for the past couple of years. On the other hand, I just picked up a short-term gig writing a software manual, so, compared to many of my colleagues, I have nothing to complain about.
