Hi StewART,
Federico Garcia [Lorca] was indeed murdered, and there is probably at least one corrido commemorating that sad deed. But the subject of the song by Los Socios de San Antonio was jailbreak artist, Fred Gomez Carrasco. Can you fix? I depend on your cd covers as the ultimate source for the index and most played list. Thanks. ASM

Thanks !
Now fixed with the right Fred !
(Don't know how that Garcia crept in !)

From notes by another Fred, at Dreamtime ! >

Pierre Mancini also gives a special shout-out to Chris Strachwitz and The Arhoolie Foundation for providing TTRH with La Muerte De Fred Gomez Carrasco. Located on the Web at http://www.arhoolie.org/ the Arhoolie Foundation was established in 1995 "for the purpose of helping to document, present, and disseminate authentic traditional and regional vernacular music." Chris Strachwitz is the foundation's current President.

Fred Gomez Carrasco seems a fairly rare recording, written by a Salome Gutierrez and released by Los Socios De San Antonio as a 45 on the DLB label, probably in 19 and 74, as Carrasco's attempted breakout from the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville took place in late July of `74.

For me La Muerte De Fred Gomez Carrasco was the highlight of a great TTRH episode. Those interested in other recordings from Los Socios De San Antonio can find a discography at the Arhoolie Foundation.

Another thing:

On Wikipedia I found this on Bascom Lamar Lunsford:

"In 1924 he recorded "Jesse James" and "I Wish I Was a Mole In the Ground" for the General Phonograph Company for commercial release. He recorded it again in 1949 for the Archive of American Folksong. It is not clear whether Bob Dylan ever heard it, but Bascom's delivery has some hallmarks of Dylan's early style, with a tight voice on the high notes."

I wonder if the version of "Poor Jesse James" played on TTRH was indeed the 1924 original or the 1949 remake... To me the recording almost sounds too clear to be from the early 20s - I would guess it's the 1949 version, but I'm not sure at all... Does anyone know?

In my age cohort we call this a "senior moment", but I'm sure you're still young enough that it was merely a lapse of concentration!

Ha, "Fred Garcia" was on tbuick6's tracklist at Hunger City... !

Here's some Espanol from LuisBP >

"La Muerte de Fred Gomez Carrasco"

El sabado 3 de agosto
del año 74
en la prision del estado
mataron a Fred Carrasco
lo acribillaron a tiros
en compañia de otros 4

Un año tenia en la carcel
sentenciado de por vida
tenia planeado fugarse
frente de la policia
queria enseñarles 'quel hombre
que miedo no les tenia

Se hizo de 13 rehenes
para proteger su vida
pidio chalecos de malla
y casco a pruebas de balas
tambien un carro blindado
para lograr su escapada

Diez dias duró negociando
pidiendo su libertad
si no cumplen lo que pido
muy pronto les va a pesar
de a uno por uno a los 13
voy a empezar a matar

Un hombre desesperado
tratando salvar su vida
se fue sobre una vidriera
sin medir que pasaria
se le escapo asi a Carrasco
en un rato que dormia

Desesperado y cansado
Con todos los que tenia
bajó por las escaleras
sabia que lo esperarian
armados hasta los dientes
montones de policias

El reverendo O'Brien
muy mal herido se queda
Gomez Carrasco y Dominguez
murieron en la refriega
tambien la señora Estende
y L Sabas de Sada

Prision de Consdil mentada
guardianes y policias
aunque quisieran negarlo
no olvidaran el mal rato
que les daria ese gallito
llamado Gomez Carrasco

Vuela vuela palomita
parate en aquel peñasco
anda avisa a San Antonio
que mataron a Carrasco
en la prision del estado
en compañia de otros 4

My Spanish - never strong - has weakened over the years (little call for it in New Hamster), so maybe one of the Spanish-literate members of the Forum can better translate the lyrics for us. But here's a (very) free-hand shot at it...

"The Death of Fred Gomez Carrasco"

On a Saturday, August 3rd
in the year `74
at the State Prison
they killed Fred Carrasco.
Riddled him with bullets
in the company of four others.

Sentenced to life,
after a year in jail
he planned his escape
wanting to show that he was a man
and that he had no fear.

They took 13 hostages
to protect their lives.
Made bulletproof helmets and vests,
even an armored car
to achieve their escape!

Negotiations lasted for 10 days.
They demanded their freedom
"If you do not give us what we ask,
you will regret it.
We will kill the 13 one-by-one."

A desperate man
trying to save his life
crawled out a shop window
while Carrasco slept.

Now desperate and weary
they charged down the stairs
with all that they had.
It would have been better to wait,
for the police were there, armed to the teeth!

Reverend O'Brien
was badly injured.
Gomez Carrasco and Dominguez
died in the fray.
As did Mrs. Estende
and L Sabas de Sada.

The prison officials, guards, and police
although they wanted to deny it
could not forget the hard time
that fighting cock Gomez Carrasco
had given them!

Fly dove, fly
Fly to San Antonio.
Stand on the rock
and tell of how they killed Carrasco
at the State Prison
in the company of four others.

Fwiw, Stewart I've also confirmed - at least to my satisfaction - that the Carrasco corrido was released in August 1974. I found a mention of the song "...heard on local Spanish language radio and on West Side juke boxes 24 hours after the death of Carrasco." in the San Antonio Express.

And because I'm nothing if not a completist, the story of "La Muerte de Fred Gomez Carrasco",
not only written in 19 and 74, but literally written and airing on radio the day after his death...

Print the legend.
