18 - There is a very interesting article "Stumbling on Lost Cigars of Bertolt Brecht" about similarities between Dylan and Brecht in the current print issue 154 of PNR (a UK poetry journal) (Subscription required). It includes this thought-provoking quote:
"When he picked up his guitar, the murmur of conversation stopped ... everyone squatted on the floor around him, charmed by his spell ... His singing was raw and abrasive, often crude like a street-singer or a music-hall minstrel, and it was pervaded with an unmistakeable provincial intonation. Sometimes he sang with something appropaching beauty; his voice floated along with emotional vibratos, and he enunciated each syllable very clearly."
This, amazingly, is a description of Brecht not Dylan!
Another fascinating insight is how much "The Times They Are A-Changing" owes to Brecht: "Times are a-changing. The mightiest scheming / Won't save the mighty. The bubble will burst. / Like bloody old peacocks they're strutting and screaming. / But times are a-changing. The last shall be the first. / The last shall be the first." (Submitted by Jim Scrivener, Budapest)
